Minister Counselor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, Deputy Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, emphasized that reforming the activities of the United Nations General Assembly is crucial for enhancing the effectiveness of the United Nations' operations and improving its ability to address global challenges. Furthermore, he highlighted that any measures to reform the General Assembly must align with the United Nations Charter, international law, and efforts to promote multilateralism, international solidarity, and cooperation while avoiding politicization and confrontation.
In that spirit, he affirmed Vietnam's support for enhancing UNGA's role in maintaining international peace and security and strengthening relations between the General Assembly and key UN bodies, including the Security Council. Vietnam supports UNGA reform that upholds principles of transparency and inclusiveness, particularly in the selection and appointment of the UN Secretary-General, co-chairs, and coordinators of General Assembly processes, taking into account gender and geographical balance.
Vietnam is committed to making active contributions to the activities of the Special Working Group on the UN General Assembly reform during the 79th session, added the diplomat.
At the meeting, delegates worldwide affirmed their respect for the central role of the UNGA in policy making and promoting major agendas as the highest representative body of the United Nations. Delegates presented their views on directions to enhance the effectiveness of the General Assembly's operations as the United Nations prepares to celebrate its 80th anniversary.
