On the late night of April 22 and the first few hours of April 23, the annual Lyrids meteor shower is expected to thrill enthusiasts in Vietnam with its light show across the skies.
According to astronomers, observers will be able to see 20 to 30 meteors per hour at its peak.
"Many areas in the North and Central regions can view the meteor shower. It can be seen with the naked eye, no telescope or other equipment is needed. All you need is to select a location with a wide view," Vu The Hoang, chairman of Hanoi Amateur Astronomy Society, told Thanh Nien newspaper.
Hoang also advised that the most ideal locations to observe Lyrids are mountainous areas and the countryside where the air is clear.
The April Lyrids are a meteor shower lasting from April 16 to April 25 each year. The source of the meteor shower is particles of dust shed by the long-period Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher. The shower usually peaks around April 22 and the morning of April 23. Nights without a moon in the sky will be ideal for seeing the meteors.
Astronomy enthusiasts will get to see another meteor shower in May, when the Eta Aquariids will appear. This one can reach 60 meteors per hour at peak.
