(VNF) - President Truong Tan Sang met Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in New York, during which the two leaders agreed to provide effective support for each other for the sake of global peace and security.

Vietnam to provide effective support for the sake of global peace and security

The meeting took place when President Truong Tan Sang was in New York to attend the UN Summit for the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development goals from September 25th -27th.

Berdimuhamedov expressed his wish to strengthen multifaceted coordination with Vietnam and agreed with President Sang’s suggestions.

The Vietnamese leader suggested facilitating visits by businesses and trade and investment promotion in highlight fields, including garments, leather and footwear, farm produce, aquaculture, plants and animal breeding, cotton materials, fibre, oil and gas, construction and materials.

While in New York, President Truong Tan Sang asked United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to further advocate and push for the peaceful handling of disputes in the East Sea, internationally known as South China Sea, during a meeting on September 24th 2015.

The Vietnamese leader said the disputes must be settled peacefully in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC) signed in 2002, along with efforts to shortly finalize a Code of Conduct in the waters (COC).

Ban agreed, stressing the importance of UNCLOS, DOC and pushed for the early finalization of DOC./.
