Vietnam Welcomes 8.8 Million International Visitors in First Half of 2024

According to the General Statistics Office, in June 2024, international visitors to Vietnam exceeded 1.2 million, marking a 28.1% increase compared to the same period last year. The country welcomed a total of over 8.8 million international visitors during the first six months of 2024. This shows a remarkable 58.4% growth compared to the previous year and a 4.1% increase compared to the same period in 2019 (pre-Covid-19).

In the first half of 2024, Vietnam’s tourism sector witnessed significant growth in revenue from accommodation and dining services, reaching a total of VND 356.4 trillion (about US $14 billion). The sector growth of several localities experienced increases compared to the same period in 2024, namely Quang Ninh (25.2%), Da Nang (22.2%), Hai Phong (15.0%), Hanoi (11.3%), Can Tho (11.2%), and Ho Chi Minh City (8.1%).

The country welcomed a total of over 8.8 million international visitors during the first six months of 2024, the General Statistics Office reported. This shows a remarkable 58.4% growth compared to the previous year and a 4.1% increase compared to the same period in 2019 (pre-Covid-19). Among the 8.8 million international visitors, air travel accounted for 83.8%, followed by road travel at 14.3%, and sea travel at 1.9%.

South Korea remained the largest source market, sending 2.28 million visitors to Vietnam during the first six months. China ranked second with nearly 1.9 million visitors. Other top-ten markets included Taiwan, Japan, the United States, Australia, India, Malaysia, and Cambodia.

The Vietnamese government has consistently prioritized South Korea as a key tourism target. From 2014 to 2019, Korean arrivals increased fivefold, with an average annual growth rate of 38%. In 2023, South Korea topped the list with 3.6 million visitors to Vietnam. Vietnam is also a significant source market for South Korea in Southeast Asia, attracting approximately 420,000 Korean visitors.

Despite reaching 50% of the annual target (17-18 million visitors) by mid-year, the peak international tourism season in Vietnam typically occurs from October to April. This period presents an opportunity for the tourism industry to accelerate growth.

Regarding revenue, the entire tourism sector is projected to achieve a 15.2% increase in accommodation and dining services and a remarkable 37.1% growth in tour-related revenue compared to the same period last year. The total revenue from tour operations during the first half of 2024 is estimated at 29.4 trillion VND, driven by proactive promotional efforts by localities to attract both domestic and international tourists.

The localities that saw significant year-on-year revenue growth are Ho Chi Minh City (42.2%), Da Nang (38.6%), Can Tho (33.7%), Hanoi (28.9%), Quang Ninh (21.0%), Binh Duong (18.5%), and Hai Phong (10.5%).

The National Tourism Administration of Vietnam is launching campaigns to boost international tourism, with European markets being a strategic focus. For example, from June 24 to July 2, Vietnam is being promoted in Paris (France), Milan (Italy), and Frankfurt (Germany).

From June 29 to July 3, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism is organizing the Vietnam Tourism and Culture Promotion Festival in South Korea for 2024. This festival aims to showcase Vietnam’s image, promote its tourism brand, highlight destinations and services, and engage with Korean citizens through cultural and tourism activities.
