Spokesperson of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang made the statement at a regular press conference held online by the ministry on March 3, VietnamPlus said.

Responding to queries on the situation in Ukraine, Hang said Vietnam shares ASEAN’s views in the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Statement on the Situation in Ukraine issued on February 26, as well as in the speech by the Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN at an emergency session of the UN General Assembly on March 1.

Vietnam calls for the observance of international law and the UN Charter, and the settlement of disputes via peaceful measures in accordance with basic principles of international law and the UN Charter, especially the principles on respecting independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries, not intervening in each other’s internal affairs, and not using or threatening to use force in international relations, she said.

Vietnam is deeply concerned about the armed conflict in Ukraine and calls on the relevant sides to exercise self-restraint, stop using force and avoid causing casualties and losses to civilians, she stressed.

Hang expressed her hope that the parties will work to ensure security, safety and essential needs of people, and protect basic infrastructure in line with the International Humanitarian Law.

Vietnam supports and calls on the international community to further facilitate the dialogue, and increase donations and humanitarian aid for civilians, she said.

Vietnam also requests the relevant parties to ensure security and safety, and create favourable conditions for the evacuation of foreigners in Ukraine, including Vietnamese, when necessary, the spokeswoman added.

According to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Statement on the Situation in Ukraine, the ASEAN Foreign Ministers are deeply concerned over the evolving situation and armed hostilities in Ukraine.

We call on all relevant parties to exercise maximum restraint and make utmost efforts to pursue dialogues through all channels, including diplomatic means to contain the situation, to de-escalate tensions, and to seek peaceful resolution in accordance with international law, the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia,” they said.

The minister expressed their belief that there is still room for a peaceful dialogue to prevent the situation from getting out of control. For peace, security, and harmonious co-existence to prevail, it is the responsibility of all parties to uphold the principles of mutual respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity and equal rights of all nations.

Addressing the UN General Assembly’s emergency special session on the situation in Ukraine on March 1, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the UN, also called on parties involved in the Russia-Ukraine tensions to exercise restraint, stop the use of force, resume dialogue, and seek long-term solutions to differences.

He welcomed the dialogue on February 28 between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations, and expressed his hope that the parties will continue maintaining dialogue towards the above-mentioned solutions, Nhan dan (People) reported./.
