A delegation of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) led by Secretary of the Party Central Committee and head of the Commission for Information and Education Nguyen Trong Nghia visited Switzerland from October 11-14.

During his stay in Switzerland, Nghia met with Anjuska Weil, Honorary President of the Swiss Party of Labour and President of the Switzerland - Vietnam Friendship Association, visited the UN Office in Geneva, and had meetings with Bern’s Mayor Bern Alec von Graffenried, and representatives of international organisations.

The hosts stressed the significance of Nghia’s visit, saying it will significantly contribute to consolidating and deepening relations between the two countries as well as cooperation between Vietnam and the UN.

Speaking highly of the position and role of the CPV and Vietnam, and the country’s achievements in the pandemic combat and socio-economic development over the past two years, they expressed their wish for stronger cooperation with Vietnam in science-technology, innovation, cultural communication, education-training, urban management and development, and humanitarian issues.

Representatives from the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and the UN said they want to coordinate with Vietnam in the fight against fake news, and in intellectual property and copyright.

For his part, Nghia briefed the hosts on Vietnam’s socio-economic development and its major orientations for cooperation with Switzerland and the UN in different areas.

Nghia expressed gratitude to the progressive Swiss friends who unitedly supported the previous cause of the resistance war for independence and national reunification as well as the building of today's socialism of the CPV and Vietnamese people.

He affirmed the wish of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and the policy of the CPV to strengthen and promote relations with communist and left-wing parties in the increasingly complicated international context.

On this occasion, he met with the staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Switzerland and the Vietnamese permanent delegation to the UN.

Nghia hailed the achievements of the Vietnamese Delegation in Geneva during Vietnam's tenure as a member of the UN Human Rights Council (2014 - 2016) as well as its direct advocacy efforts at the headquarters of the Human Rights Council in the UN depsite the fact that the international context has many difficulties and complexities and high competition in this election campaign.

Vietnam has been elected as a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2023 - 2025 term and this is a great achievement, affirming the country's international position and position after 35 years of renovation and international integration, he said.

Nghia also listened to the opinions of intellectuals and expatriates in Switzerland, Vietnamese experts working at UN international organisations, visited and encouraged them to integrate well with their host countries, at the same time, towards the homeland with sentiments and practical contributions.

Trade revenue between Vietnam and Switzerland in the first seven months of this year was over CHF 1.3 billion (USD 1.32 billion), up 1.3% year-on-year, according to statistics by the Swiss customs.

Switzerland is Vietnam’s important partner in Europe and the Southeast Asian nation was Switzerland’s third largest seafood trade partner in 2021, after Norway and the Netherlands.

During the 2021-2023 period, Switzerland has continued its development assistance to Vietnam, with funding of 70 million CHF to help the country in environmental protection, economic reform and personnel training.
