The national team claimed their first championship title at the women triple competition of the Women and Junior Pétanque World Championship 2023, which concluded on November 27 in Thailand, VOV reported.

Four Vietnamese players competing include Trinh Thi Kim Thanh, Tran Thi Diem Trang from Binh Duong province, Thach Thi Anh Lan, Kim Thi Thu Thao from Tra Vinh province.

The final match saw the Vietnamese players get off to a good start as they defeated the hosts Thailand 3-0, before then racing ahead into a 6-1 lead. However, their Thai opponents quickly came back to level the score at 6-6 a few minutes later.

Vietnam dominated the game in the second set with a score of 11-8, although Thailand were able to reverse the situation to get the score to 12-11 in favour of the hosts.

Through great determination, the Vietnamese players managed to sneak ahead and finish with a score of 13-12 in the final minutes to bring home a gold medal.

This comes after they trounced their French rivals 13-10 in the semi-final round to win a ticket to the finals.

This is also the first time in the history of pétanque that Vietnam has won a world gold medal.

Elsewhere, local player Thach Thi Anh Lan bagged a silver medal in the individual technical event of the women’s competition after losing to a competitor from Myanmar in the final match.

Pétanque is a French outdoor game in which players take turns to throw a metal ball as near as possible to a smaller wooden ball while standing with their feet together.

In August, female Vietnamese athletes outplayed their Thai opponents in the final game of the fifth Asian Petanque Championship in Malaysia, clinching a gold medal. This is the first gold medal that Vietnamese athletes have hunted for in Petanque over the past 20 years.

The fifth Asian Petanque Championship 2023 took place at the Arena Petanque Kuala Lumpur, Pudu Ulu, Malaysia, from August 16 to 21.

The tournament hosted by Malaysian Boules Sports Federation comprise Men, Women and Junior Triple and Shooting competitions.
