The closing ceremony of the International Army Games 2021 was held at Patriot Park on the outskirts of Moscow on Sept. 4. According to the final results, the Vietnam People's Army team ranked 7th out of 42 countries and territories participating in the sports festival.
In this year's games, the Vietnamese team competed in 15 competitions and hosted two events for the first time. The Vietnam People's Army's delegation overcame difficulties in terms of weather and pandemic, and joined intense training activities, to perform well at the event, securing one gold, two silver, and four bronze medals, and many individual awards, according to VNA.
Major General Aleksandr Peryazev, Deputy Chief of the General Department of Combat Training under the Russian Armed Forces highly appreciated Vietnam's preparation and organization of the "Sniper Frontier" and "Emergency Area" competitions. He also said that the Vietnamese team had achieved good results, the members were professionally trained, and strictly followed the competitions' rules.
The Vietnamese team made its mark even in events that it participated in for the first time, including Sea Cup, Meridian, Tactical Gunner, and Army of Culture.
In the Sea Cup, Vietnam sent 015 Tran Hung Dao and 016 Quang Trung frigates to compete in Vladivostok city. The team won the silver medal, achieved equal or higher results than the host team, Russia, in some events.
The Vietnamese team won the gold medal in the Sniper Frontier, beating 6 other teams. In Accident Area content, the team earned a silver medal, losing to Russia.
The Vietnamese tank team put in their best efforts to achieve outstanding results in its competitions with the strongest teams in Group 1 of Tank Biathlon content.

In the qualifying round, the country competed in the same group with Mongolia, Venezuela, and Syria, which have long owned T-72 tanks and are proficient in this type of weapon. Vietnam is the only team in the group that does not own a T-72 tank and has the entire training process with non-equivalent vehicles. Despite difficulties, the team ranked 9th in the qualifying round with the completion time of 1 hour 21 minutes 25 seconds, defeated 14 out of 15 targets. This achievement is significantly improved compared to last year's result when three Vietnamese crews finished their performance in 1 hour 44 minutes 18 seconds and only defeated 11 targets.
Team meridians received a bronze medal, while the tactical gunners placed 4th overall with many high results.
The culture team ranked 4th out of 13 with 8 important prizes. The team also won two special trophies voted by the audience, one of which was for the most viewed and liked introduction video (159,000 views and more than 26,000 likes), and the other was for the team that won the most votes from audience (3.55 point out of 5).
The team reached better results than last year in content where the team already has experienced, even though it faced more opponents and tougher conditions.
The engineer combat team won the bronze medal for three consecutive years. Field kitchen won the bronze medal while the artillery group ranked first among the 5 non-CIS teams. Vietnam reached 4th place in some contents, very close to win a medal.
Lieutenant General Phung Si Tan, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army, said that Army Games was an opportunity for Vietnamese soldiers to gain experience in combat readiness training, especially in approaching, using, and preserving new and modern weapons and equipment. Those experiences contribute to improving the quality of combat training and affirming the position of the Vietnam People's Army.
The International Army Games 2021 was held from Aug. 22 to Sept. 4. A total of 260 teams from 45 countries and territories participated in the event, competing in 34 categories. With 34 medals, the host Russia ranked first in the medal tally at the event.
