From the end of 2021, Vietnam has made efforts to develop a Covid-19 digital vaccination certificate to prepare for the return of international visitors.
The electronic vaccination certificate displays the user's personal information and vaccination information through a QR code with an expiry date of 12 months. From March 15, 2022, Vietnam has officially announced the reopening of tourism activities.
The Ministry of Health has collaborated with PATH (International Non-Profit Organization), with support from the UK, to link national immunization data to the standard. This standard is issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Union and the United Kingdom to facilitate movement in and out of the country.
Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Vietnam Gareth Ward said, the UK is delighted to support PATH and the Ministry of Health in developing a Covid-19 digital vaccination certificate for Vietnam: “The project has proven that public-private partnerships and civil society can bring positive results. It is also a big step forward in Vietnam's digital transformation, bringing about data transparency and enabling data-driven policymaking."

Chairing the workshop on implementing Covid-19 digital vaccination certificate taking place on the afternoon of March 22, with the participation of 63 provinces and cities across the country, Deputy Minister of Health Tran Van Thuan talked about the importance of this project:
“The Covid-19 pandemic has strengthened the application of information technology for activities such as data collection for pandemic prevention. This is a pivotal moment that shows that adopting innovative approaches in today's context will accelerate the use of digitized and responsive systems as the world moves towards a new normal," Thuan said.

Vietnam is currently one of the six countries with the highest vaccination coverage rate in the world. The vaccine coverage rate for people aged 18 years and over with 1 dose is nearly 100%, 99% with 2 doses, and the rate of people who have received the 3rd dose is 43.5%. For people 12 to 17 years old, the rate of 1 dose is 99% and 2 doses is 94%.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, PATH has been supporting governments by establishing emergency response centers for pandemic prevention; advice on testing, treatment and outbreak management; build data systems for pandemic surveillance.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, PATH has been collaborating with government agencies and international partners to develop and deploy Covid-19 vaccination, strengthen pandemic surveillance and reporting systems. They also assess and address gaps in oxygen supply and respiratory care.
