Young ambassadors of culture

Among the diverse content on TikTok, many young people are capturing the essence of their hometowns. These videos highlight famous landmarks, local culture, regional specialties, or simply everyday life with family and friends.

A standout example is the TikTok channel "Tieu Man Thau" by Nguyen Thi Thuong from Son Tay, Hanoi. This channel has millions of followers and features clips that showcase tourist spots and local cuisine. Many videos also share snippets of her daily life, such as enjoying delicious dishes around the ancient Son Tay citadel or visiting her grandparents. Each video exudes a joyful, gentle spirit, spreading positive energy to viewers.

Similarly, the TikTok channel "The England du lich Ninh Binh," managed by Bui The Anh, features numerous short videos promoting local tourism to audiences. The Anh, along with many other young creators in Ninh Binh, uses social media to convey messages and showcase their homeland's heritage to both domestic and international tourists.

Another notable channel is "An Den," by Nguyen Thuy An from Dak Lak. This channel, with millions of followers and tens of millions of likes, impresses viewers with its portrayal of a young girl living a rustic life. Her videos, filled with everyday stories and observations about her hometown's nature and scenery, have won the hearts of many.

These three TikTokers (content creators on TikTok) exemplify how young people use their platforms to share their hometowns' cultural identities with a wider audience. Videos showcasing the culture of one's homeland have garnered enthusiastic responses from the online community. Many viewers have expressed their admiration and appreciation for the cultural beauty highlighted in these clips. Beyond just sparking interest, these videos also instill a sense of pride in young people, motivating them to learn about and preserve their traditional values.

More efforts needed to utilize benefits of social media in culture promotion

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thanh Nam, ViVi-Rector of the University of Education (Vietnam National University, Hanoi), young people are pioneers and innovators. By creating new trends, they help promote Vietnamese tourism and culture. Videos about customs, landscapes, and cuisine have contributed to spreading traditional cultural values and fostering a love for their hometowns among young people.

“Content production is now recognized as a profession. When creating content related to culture, people, customs, and practices, content creators must possess skills, practical experience, and cultural knowledge,” he said.

In agreement, Dr. Tran Huu Son asserts that creative content must be connected to real life. Each content creator should have their own unique style. Additionally, they must possess rich knowledge and life experiences, and, most importantly, have a dedicated and sincere heart in their work.

MA. Nguyen Dac Toi, former Head of the Heritage Research Department at the Institute for Cultural and Development Studies, stated that short videos on TikTok offer valuable cultural insights and information about one's homeland. This positively influences cultural development. However, to captivate viewers, content creators must present fresh ideas in terms of content, perspective, and delivery methods. Furthermore, it is essential for creators to thoroughly research and understand the cultural topics they wish to cover, to prevent any misunderstandings among viewers.
