Baladeshis hospital owner arrested over faking thousands of COVID-19 results

Mohammad Shahed, accused of issuing thousands of fake COVID-19 certificates at two hospitals, arrested after a nine-day manhunt while trying to flee to India. Shahid is also accused of charging for the certificates and COVID-19 treatments even though he had agreed with the government that his hospitals in the capital Dhaka would provide free care.

As reported by Al Jazeera, Shahed, 42, was one of more than a dozen people detained by authorities over the past few days for faking 6,300 virus-free test reports without conducting any test. 4,200 were genuine.

A well-known doctor and her husband were also arrested by police and accused of issuing thousands of fake virus certificates at their Dhaka laboratory.

Experts warn the false documents have worsened the already dire situation in the country of 168 million people by casting doubt about the veracity of certificates issued by clinics.

Denmark’s Prime Minister ties the knot after postponement

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen gets married on the Danish island of Zealand with a former PM in attendance July 15 after three postponements due to political responsibilities on top of the pandemic.

It was a small wedding of 90 people, including the former Danish Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmusen as a guest. After the 40-minute ceremony, the happy couple posed for pictures before going on to celebrate with guests, Tatler reported.

On her Instagram account, Frederiksen captioned the photo of the radiant couple “YES” followed by a heart.

Frederiksen had earlier confirmed via a Facebook post that they were changing their day for the third time to ‘take care of Denmark’s interests’.

Frederiksen, who shares two children with her ex-husband, first met Tengberg in 2014 before the couple made their first joint appearance at former Prime Minister Anker Jørgensen's funeral in the spring of 2016.

Gold prices log lowest finish in more than a week

Gold futures fell Thursday to their lowest finish in more than a week, with dollar-denominated prices for the metal pressured as the U.S. dollar looked to recoup its loss from a day earlier.

Investors also assessed the landscape for the global economy and markets amid rising U.S. coronavirus cases, while the European Central Bank, as expected kept keep both its key rate and asset-buying program unchanged.

Bullion has been held in a range around $1,800 as rising cases of COVID-19 in many American states undermine the economic recovery, while U.S.- China tensions are also rising.

Weekly U.S. jobless claims data released Thursday showed a decline of 10,000 to a post-pandemic low of 1.3 million, though the small decline points to ongoing stress in the labor market. Retail sales climbed 7.5% last month after a record 18.2% rise in May.

Gold for August delivery GC00, -0.17% on Comex fell $13.50, or 0.7%, to settle at $1,800.30 an ounce, after adding less than 0.1% on Wednesday. The settlement was the lowest for a most-active contract since July 6, according to FactSet data.

September silver SIU20, -0.27%, meanwhile, declined by 19 cents, or about 1%, at $19.573 an ounce, following a 1.2% Wednesday surge for gold’s sister metal.

The moves for the precious metals came even as equity markets globally were in retreat. The U.S. dollar, meanwhile, was trading 0.2% higher in Thursday dealings, as gauged by the ICE U.S. Dollar Index DXY, -0.03% following a similar climb a day earlier.

Among other metals traded on Comex, September copper HGU20, -0.21% rose 0.6% to $2.9015 a pound. October platinum PLV20, -0.32% lost 0.7% to $837 an ounce, but September palladium PAU20, -0.69% rose nearly 0.8% to $2,025.10 an ounce, Market Watch said.
