Ngo Thi Hong Mai, an Economic Law student at Hue University of Law, comes from a poor family. Her father suffers from mental illness. Her mother raises the children and takes care of her father all by herself. The family's main income comes from farming, however, due to her mother's senior age, she could not make a stable income.
To assist her mother, Hong Mai went to work when she was still a student. From a little waitress at a coffee shop, Mai becomes a barista. Although balancing study and part-time work is not easy, though there are days when she returns home from work exhausted, Mai does not give up. She also does not allow herself to lose focus on studying by always achieving excellent academic results.
Mai said: "I was delighted that I have done something that I never dared to think before, that is, I no longer ask my mother for money to pay tuition and living expenses. I am working part-time and pay for my studies."
Although she has to flexibly arrange her time for both studying and part-time work, Mai is still interested in activities to help the community such as participating in humanitarian blood donation activities, protecting the environment...
Tran Nguyen Phuong Uyen, a student majoring in Chinese Language, Hue University of Foreign Languages, was born in a near-poor household. Her father has spinal degeneration and has lost the ability to work, while her brother has nephrotic syndrome. He has to go to follow-up examinations and take medication every month, paying 150,000 VND to 200,000 VND a day for medicine. Her younger brother is in 5th grade. As the main breadwinner of the family, Uyen's mother grows bean sprouts to sell but she could not make enough money for the family. They have to take loans to pay tuition for the two sisters and medicine for my brother.
Uyen's mother worries a lot about ensuring that her child continues pursuing her college dream. Seeing her child's eyes light up when she received notice of her admission, the mother worked her best and borrowed money from neighbors so that her child could go to university. Uyen is also trying to find a part-time job to help her mother pay for part of her study and living expenses.
A representative of the Zhi Shan Foundation said that by listening to the children's sharing, they were even more impressed by their resilient will to overcome adversity. It is the challenging situation that has sharpened their bright dreams.
During the visit, Zhi Shan Foundation gave each child a package of necessities as a gift of encouragement. There are currently 629 students receiving Zhi Shan scholarships at universities and colleges across the country. Among them, 163 students are studying in Hue.
