On July 21st, 1954, the Geneva Agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Vietnam were signed, marking a brilliant milestone in the nation's history and serving as an endless source of inspiration for the national liberation movements worldwide.
Seventy years after its signing, the Geneva Agreement still retain immense value, standing as a testament to Vietnam's indomitable spirit, its determination for independence, and its diplomatic prowess.

After nine arduous years of resistance, the Vietnamese people achieved a historic victory with the signing of the Geneva Agreement. This triumph ended French colonial rule and inspired countless liberation movements worldwide. The strategic approach employed by the Vietnamese Workers' Party demonstrated its wisdom and solidified the people's trust in its leadership.
Through this event, the Party's political, military, and diplomatic approach has proven the correctness of its wisdom and contributions, thereby strengthening the people's faith in the Party's leadership.
Along with the 1946 Preliminary Agreement and the 1973 Paris Agreement, the 1954 Geneva Agreement was a glorious milestone in Vietnam’s revolutionary diplomacy, bearing the imprint of President Ho Chi Minh’s ideology, style and art of diplomacy. It was also a vivid demonstration of the country’s "bamboo diplomacy," as recognized by international experts.
After the Agreement, Vietnam was provided with favorable conditions to build socialism in the North and continue the struggle for national reunification. Vietnam's victory at the Geneva negotiations also encouraged the national liberation movements worldwide, contributing to the collapse of the global colonial system.
The combination of national strength and the strength of the times is undoubtedly a valuable lesson learned from the process leading to the historic day of July 21st, 1954. To achieve victory, Vietnam sought the support of socialist countries and progressive forces worldwide. The lesson of steadfastness in struggle and flexibility in negotiation is also clearly demonstrated in the negotiation process. Vietnam has steadfastly defended its independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, while at the same time demonstrating flexibility and creativity to reach agreements with other parties.
Furthermore, Vietnam's active diplomacy at Geneva played a significant role in the overall victory of the resistance against the French. The Geneva Agreement demonstrated and affirmed the importance of diplomacy in the cause of defending and building the country.
