Bhutan Hopes to Strengthen Multi-faceted Ties With Vietnam

On June 14, the Vietnamese Ambassador to India, Nepal, and Bhutan, Nguyen Thanh Hai, came to Bhutan to meet with the local authorities.
He had meetings with Bhutanese Prime Minister Lyonchhen Lotay Tshering, Speaker of the National Assembly (lower house) Wangchuk Namgyel, Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Tandi Dorji, and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Loknath Sharma.
At the meetings, Bhutanese leaders, ministries and branches appreciated Vietnam's reform and socio-economic development achievements. They wish to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai conveyed the greetings of the leaders of the Party and State of Vietnam to the leaders of Bhutan. The Ambassador also shared about Vietnam's socio-economic development as well as foreign relations and affirmed his commitment to contribute to enhancing cooperation between the two countries.
Bhutan Prime Minister Lyonchhen Lotay Tshering shared with Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai about the strong and comprehensive reform plans that the Bhutanese government is finalizing and is currently being discussed in the National Assembly of this country, especially on public administration, finance, education, investment attraction and airport.

Speaker of the National Assembly (lower house) Wangchuk Namgyel emphasized the role of parliamentary cooperation and people-to-people exchanges in increasing cooperation between the two countries.
He proposed measures to strengthen exchange and coordination between the National Assembly (lower house) of Bhutan and the National Assembly of Vietnam, including sharing legislative experience in areas of mutual concern.
In the context that Bhutan wishes to become a developed country by 2035, the Bhutanese leaders proposed to further strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in various fields, especially investment, trade, tourism, agriculture and forestry.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Tandi Dorji suggested that the two sides strengthen the exchange of high-level delegations and levels, as well as contact between the two countries on the sidelines of multilateral conferences.
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Loknath Sharma wished to strengthen cooperation with Vietnam in the fields of renewable energy, forestry, organic agriculture, and freshwater fish farming.
Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai appreciated Bhutan's sustainable development achievements in recent years, especially its success in becoming the country with the highest happiness index in the world.
The Ambassador appreciated the reform determination of Bhutan's National Assembly and Government, affirming that Vietnam attaches great importance to relations with Bhutan and wishes to contribute to the reform and development process of this country.

During the meetings, Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai agreed with the Bhutanese leaders that, on the basis of the Vietnam-Bhutan friendship since the establishment of diplomatic relations in January 2012, people-to-people exchanges after the Covid-19 pandemic, the two sides have favorable conditions to further promote multi-faceted ties.
Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai discussed with Bhutan leaders about specific measures to promote cooperation in the fields that the two countries have needs and advantages.

During this visit, Ambassador Nguyen Thanh Hai had a discussion with businesses at the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in tourism, hotel, mining, infrastructure, and trade on business cooperation opportunities between the two countries.
