The team of authors Phuong Bui, Thanh Nguyen, Kim Dung, along with illustrators Xuan Quynh, Ruoc Dang, and NGART, have dedicated many years to creating the book series "Glorifying Ancient Crafts." This series provides a wealth of information and knowledge about traditional Vietnamese crafts.
Each book in the "Glorifying Ancient Crafts" series is structured like a film episode, featuring a clever, intelligent, and curious seven-year-old girl named An as the main character. An embarks on exciting journeys with her grandparents and parents to traditional craft villages across the country. These include Tan Chau silk village, known for producing the legendary Lanh My A silk (An Giang); Van Chang blacksmith village (Nam Dinh) with a history of over seven centuries; Chang Son carpentry village (Thach That - Ha Noi); Dong Xam craft-jewelry village (Thai Binh); Bau Truc pottery village (Ninh Thuan), which preserves the ancient technique of open-air pottery firing; and Phu Quoc island, famous for its fish sauce production.
During their visits, An's family explores craft workshops, meets artisans, and learns about the basic processes of creating famous handicraft products. The series also delves into the history of craft villages, traditional cultural values embedded in each handicraft product, unique folk craft festivals, and the evolution of craft villages over time.
With concise and easy-to-understand storytelling, complemented by bright, close-knit illustrations rich in Vietnamese colors, the book series imparts a wealth of knowledge about traditional crafts. It helps children appreciate and cherish the beauty of traditional craft villages and encourages the community to unite in preserving and protecting these ancient crafts.
Currently, the "Glorifying Ancient Crafts" series has published six books nationwide, including "Lanh My A - The Legend of Silk," "Chang Son - Carpentry Village - The Touch of Time," "Dong Xam Silver Crafting - Preserving Quintessence," "Van Chang Blacksmith Village - Eternal Forge," "Phu Quoc Fish Sauce - The Taste of Pearl Island," and "Bau Truc Pottery Village - Golden Soil on Sacred Fields." Shortly, the series is expected to release four more books: "Phu My Basket Boat - Reaching the Sea," "Doi Tam Drum - The Sound of Thunder," "Hue Bronze Casting Ward - Heritage Masterpiece," and "Sung Village Do Paper - Peaceful Beauty."
