This is a big event with diverse activities and the participation of nearly 500 delegates, of whom more than 300 are foreigners, said Secretary General of the National Assembly (NA) and Chairman of the NA Office Bui Van Cuong, who is also deputy head of the conference organizing committee.

Strong commitment of the young parliamentarian

According to Bui Van Cuong, this has important significance in the context that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is facing many difficulties and challenges.

The conference is scheduled to issue the first-ever statement on the role of youths in accelerating the implementation of the SDGs through digital transformation and innovation, Cuong said.

The statement will be a political call and a strong commitment of young parliamentarians.

It is proposed to include strong, signature messages to contribute to the implementation of relevant international commitments. This promotes the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through digital transformation and innovation.

The statement addresses what young parliamentarians and parliaments can do to promote science and digital transformation to achieve sustainable development goals.

These include promoting youth education, prioritizing digital skills, science and other tools, developing a common parliamentary approach to establish a framework of principles, values and direction to accommodate decision-making, research and development in science and technology.

It also emphasizes respecting the richness of different cultures, experiences and perspectives in driving digital transformation and innovation. Cultural diversity is a strength for sustainable development that not only needs to be protected but also cherished, as it is an indispensable element that can nurture creativity and innovation.

Large-scale conference, with diverse activities

This is the largest conference ever with nearly 500 delegates. Including more than 200 parliamentarians from countries around the world, more than 300 delegates from 80 different delegations, representatives from parliamentary bodies, regional parliamentary and inter-parliamentary forums and youth organizations.

According to Zeina Hilal, representative of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Secretariat, this is not just a simple statistic but shows the concern of parliamentarians and delegates from other countries. They came to Vietnam to attend the event and contribute ideas on important topics such as digital transformation, innovation, and implementation of sustainable development goals. This is also a testament to the friendship between the IPU and the National Assembly of Vietnam.

The conference will have three sessions focusing on digital transformation, innovation, and startups, and promoting respect for cultural diversity for sustainable development.

Vu Hai Ha, head of the NA’s External Relations Committee, said "The Vietnamese NA’s hosting of the 'Ninth Global Conference of Young Parliamentarians' in 2023 is an important external relations event, reflecting Vietnam’s active, responsible participation in the international community’s largest inter-parliamentary organization. It also shows Vietnam’s attention to the youth and global youth issues. This is part of activities to realize Directive 25 of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat on promoting multilateral diplomacy until 2030 and youth development strategy in the 2021‑2030 period."

The process of preparing and organizing the conference demonstrates the concern of the Party and State of Vietnam for the young generation, and the role of the youth in developing the country, building a world of peace, and prosperity, and solving global challenges.

It also demonstrates the special role and strengths of Vietnamese youth organizations compared to countries that previously hosted the conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). It attracts the participation of young people and is an opportunity for Vietnam to promote youth movements to international friends.
