Nam said that he and his wife dropped out of school when they were small and their health is so poor; hence, the dream of building a new house seems to be impossible to them especially when their children were born. Fortunately, Nam’s family received financial aid to build a new house from the Youth Union.

“My family’s big dream comes true. The time ahead will be full of good things”, Nam’s wife said.

During our journey to Dong Tam, we had a talk with Le Dinh Luong, Secretary of the Party Cell cum Head of Hoanh Village, Dong Tam Commune. Despite taking up the position since February 2020, Luong witnesses the considerable changes in the life of Hoanh villagers. These changes result from the all-out efforts of the local as well as the material and spiritual concern of leaders at all levels and organizations.

“The locally cultural tradition has been preserved. The sport and art activities have been promoted. If it had not been the COVID-19 pandemic, the football tournament to celebrate Vietnam's National Day also could have taken place”, said Bui Van Thin, cadre in charge of culture in Dong Tam commune.

Striving to meet new rural standards

Dong Tam Commune has strived to meet new rural standards by 2021. This goal is not so difficult to attain as there is a strong determination of the local people and authorities here. The work such as transport and irrigation receive enthusiastic responses from the indigenous. Each person is aware of building the homeland more beautiful through small actions like planting flowers or tidying up village roads.

Hoanh villagers actively and excitedly discussed at the Conference on People's Council Deputies. For instance, after many years of being delayed, the construction of the drainage system was completed. Even two households allowed the drainage system to run through their gardens.

Chairman of Dong Tam Commune People's Committee, Hoang Thanh Huong added that in the spring crop 2020, the rice area in Dong Tam reached 99.14%, the highest rate over the past few years. Trade-service activities in the commune are relatively stable and the quality of the people’s lives has been improved. Dong Tam was also among the communes in My Duc District that supported the most for the COVID-19 fight with the amount money of nearly 200 million VND.

Carpentry is one of the key occupations in Dong Tam.

“Currently, many people in Dong Tam still have to work outside the locality. Thus, the commune has planned to create on-spot jobs such as handicrafts, carpentry, construction materials production, etc for them”, Huong added.
