"As long as you have passion and persevere in pursuing it, you will overcome all barriers and social prejudices," shared Thanh Nga, one of 60 players participating in the women's soccer tournament to fight gender stereotypes held by Plan International Vietnam and Women's Union of Xin Man district, Ha Giang province on June 22 - 23.

This activity is within the framework of the 'Reaching The Furthest Behind' program funded by the Irish Embassy in Vietnam.

The first women's soccer tournament held in Xin Man attracted the participation of 6 teams from two communes of Nam Dan and Nan Ma of Xin Man district.

The event has created a space for women to perform their passion for the king sport - soccer. Women have participated in tournaments around the world since the 19th century and there have always been women who want to assert themselves in this field.

Participants, from Hmong, Nung, Tay and Hoa ethnic groups, shared a desire that gender stereotypes will change so that women have more choices in professions, and roles in communities, and can contribute more to the community.

Phase II of Reaching The Furthest Behind program is implemented from September 2023 to August 2028.

The program aims to improve the quality of life of vulnerable ethnic minorities in 6 communes of Dakrong and Huong Hoa districts of Quang Tri province; 4 communes of Da Bac and Lac Son districts, Hoa Binh province and 5 communes of Xin Man and Vi Xuyen districts, Ha Giang province.

The program applies community-centered approaches promotes the agency of women in the process of socio-economic development, and boosts the implementation of policies to support the socio-economic development of ethnic minority groups and mountainous areas.

Through this program, ethnic minority communities, especially girls, people with disabilities, and women in 15 especially difficult communes of Quang Tri, Hoa Binh, and Ha Giang are hoped to be empowered to respond and adapt to climate change, thereby improving their positions in families, communities and society.
