The football classic awaits us in the EURO 2020 Round of 16 as England meets Germany at Wembley. This is the place where Three Lions achieved their greatest success, winning the World Cup in 1966, beating Germany in the finals. However, exactly 30 years later, Die Mannschaft lifted the European title, so we might say that Wembley revokes nice memories for both sides. However, this match will be all but nice, as two nemeses, two fierce rivals clash once again. It is going to be another contest labeled as historical, which is something normal when these football powerhouses meet.

The match will be held at Wembey Stadium.

Team news

Southgate restored Harry Maguire to his team for the win over the Czech Republic, and he looks set to stay alongside John Stones.

As things stand, Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell will be unavailable given they are currently self-isolating after coming nto contact with Billy Gilmour, who tested positive for Covid-19 after the England vs Scotland game.

However, that situation could develop, and Mount would likely start were he available.

Bukayo Saka and Jack Grealish impressed after being handed starts against the Czechs, so Southgate will be under pressure to keep both in his lineup against Germany.

Given the game could likely be won in midfield, Southgate may opt to play Jordan Henderson in a three.

Phil Foden was rested for the Czech draw given he would have been suspended had he picked up another booking, and may have to settle for a bench role on Tuesday.

Thomas Muller failed to recover from a knee injury for Germany’s draw with Hungary, and the fact that he was not even brought off the bench when Low was chasing the game suggests he may be some way off match fitness.

Neither team has any suspended players.

England (+160) didn’t concede during the group stage, but they haven’t been that impressive on the other side of the pitch. Two goals from Raheem Sterling was all this team produced in the first three matches, which is, in our opinion, way too low, especially for a favorite that aims to win the title here.

Southgate’s side looked pale, to be honest. We can argue about the statistics all we want, but overall, England’s performances were way below the expected. Yes, they have nine matches without a defeat and eight wins during that span, but we aren’t impressed with how this team plays.

Albions’ most recent matches were all low-scoring affairs, with five of them ending with just one or no goals. As we saw already, Southgate’s tactic is to protect his own net and only then attack.

Germany (+175) is the team that oscillated the most during this championship. At first, they lost to France in the opener, 0-1. After that, they would roll over Portugal, the reigning champions, before escaping death in the last round against Hungary.

Their fans were on edge in that last game, because Hungary had the lead on two occasions, and if it weren’t for Leon Goretzka‘s late goal, Joachim Low‘s side would deliver another shocking exit from one major championship.

Though, we need to say that results aren’t showing Germany’s dominance in all those matches. They always controlled the tempo and the rhythm, constantly attacking but without a proper finish. The lack of one typical target man creates problems for Low, and we are regularly mentioning this since the tournament started. We need to add that Germany kept clean sheets just once in the past six games, which is one more issue they need to take care of.

Prediction

Joachim Low has promised that we will see a ‘different’ Germany in the knockouts, but they will have to step things up against England.

The Germans put four past Portugal in thrilling fashion, but shipped five goals during the group stages - and England are yet to concede this summer.

It should be a tight game at Wembley, and England will be slught favourites given their defensive record - but mentality may prove the decisive factor, and Low’s squad has bags of it.

We won’t go too far into the past but focus on more recent games. Since 2013, England and Germany played four times, with Die Mannschaft winning two, England triumphing on one occasion, and one match closing with a draw.

Betting tips

Despite the absence of Wayne Rooney, England’s strength still looks to be in attack with Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy enjoying prolific seasons in the Premier League while Daniel Sturridge, arguably their best finisher, is also in the squad. The likes of Ross Barkley and Dele Alli also offer a genuine goal threat from midfield so an away goal is likely but it’s hard to see England keeping a clean sheet, something they’ve only managed in 2 of their last 14 away friendlies.

Despite some poor results Germany have scored at least once in all of their last 10 home internationals and they’ve netted twice or more in 8 of those games and like England are stronger going forward than at the back. Therefore there is plenty of reason to back both teams to score at 10/11.
