At least five people have been killed and two others injured as torrential rains triggered floods and landslides in the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang this week, the provincial steering committee for natural disaster prevention reported.

More than 60 houses were damaged by mudslides, while 2,800 houses were flooded. Floods have submerged six hamlets of Yen Dinh commune and two others in Minh Ngoc commune, Bac Me district, and blocked 33 roads in Ha Giang city. Many cars were sunk into flood water.

Approximately 215 hectares of crops and rice paddies were flooded, while five hectares of forest and 24 hectares of fish farms were destroyed.

Two local hydropower plants, Thuan Hoa and Thai An, had to cease operations after being hit by rockslides.

The provincial steering committee for natural disaster prevention and control, search and rescue estimated that flooding has caused property losses worth over VND 80 billion (USD 3.4 million) to Ha Giang, excluding hydropower damage.

According to Director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Hoang Phuc Lam, the rainwater level measured in Ha Giang ranged from 100 mm and 300 mm.

In Ha Giang city, the rainwater was recorded at 247 mm a day, he said, noting that this is the highest rainwater level recorded since 1961.

The Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control sent an urgent document to all relevant provinces warning about the high risk of flash floods and landslides in Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Ha Giang, Tuyên Quang, Cao Bang and Bac Kan provinces.

Weather forecast this weekend

Heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms, strong gusts, and hails are expected to continue dampening Ha Giang and other northern mountainous provinces in the coming days, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting.

The centre warned of floods and landslides in Ha Giang city, and Vi Xuyen, Bac Me, Hoang Su Phi, Yen Minh, Bac Quang, Meo Vac, Quan Ba and Xin Man districts, Ha Giang province.

Hanoi will face hot weather from July 23-26, with temperatures ranging from 34-38C, with 38C in forecast for July 26, read weatheronline.co.ok.

The UV index in the capital city hits level 10 on July 26, defined as very strong, raising the risk of skin damage, including skin cancer, for people exposed under the sun for a long time.

Weather forecast for central provinces

Extreme heat is forecast to dominate the localities on July 23 with temperatures from 34-37C, even passing 37C in some places. The heatwave will persist during this weekend.

Thousands of hectares of rice have been lost because of the prolonged hot weather, while many rice fields have been abandoned due to lack of water. Saline intrusion was affecting many areas.

The UV index in Da Nang city stands at level 11 (very strong) from July 23-26, while the index in Thua Thien-Hue hits levels 9 and 10.

Thanh Hoa province had planted more than 112,000ha of rice out of total 116,000ha.

According to the Thanh Hoa Irrigation Sub-department, water levels in 241 out of 610 reservoirs have fallen, with some reservoirs drying up.

At present, 7,500ha of rice lacked water. The local authorities had to install hundreds of pumps to save the crops.

Meanwhile, in Ha Tinh province, the hot weather and drought had caused many crops to wither.

Huong Khe and Huong Son districts are the localities facing the worst drought.

The local government and agriculture and rural development department had carried out measures on drought control such as dredging canals and digging wells.

Similar to Thanh Hoa and Ha Tinh provinces, Nghe An had faced seven bouts of hot weather since earlier this year.
