Associate Professor, Dr. Tran Ngoc Son, Deputy Director of Saint Paul General Hospital, said that in October 2023, an Australian family based in Indonesia found out that their 4-year-old daughter suffered abdominal pain and vomiting. The parents took their child to the hospital, where the girl was diagnosed with a common bile duct cyst and was advised to have open surgery to remove the cyst.

The family did not want their child to suffer much pain and noticeable scars. After researching documents and learning about modern surgical techniques in different countries, they found an article about Vietnamese single-hole laparoscopic surgery technique to treat common bile duct cysts published by Dr. Tran Ngoc Son in an international scientific journal. Currently, only Vietnam and China routinely perform this surgery technique.

With the help of Indonesian doctors, they had Son's contact. After exchanging emails, the couple and their daughter came to Vietnam this October for medical treatment.

According to Son, one-hole endoscopy goes through the navel with an incision of less than 2 cm so it leaves no scars and less pain, causes less damage to the abdominal barrier. After the surgery, the wound heals quickly. The young child can soon run and jump again. The cyst will not recur.

Son said that many Vietnamese people go abroad to treat certain diseases, yet many foreigners come to Vietnam for treatment. He hopes that Vietnam's medical sector will continue to progress to gain more trust from Vietnam residents and international friends.
