Stressing the great significance of the Party chief’s article, German historian and veteran journalist Gerhard Feldbauer pointed out that throughout its leadership process, the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) has creatively applied Marxism-Leninism to Vietnam’s specific conditions to address a wide range of complex and difficult issues.

Valuable experience has been drawn not only by Vietnam but also many countries in the world, he added.

According to the German historian, in his article, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong mentioned the brilliant milestones in Vietnamese history, the fact that the CPV led the Vietnamese people to successfully implement the August Revolution, and on September 2, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh solemnly announcing to the world the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

The historian added that in a period of ups and downs of the revolutionary struggle, of which Vietnam is an example showing the road to a new society - a society where there are no more scenes of people exploiting people – the nation will definitely succeed no matter how many hardships lie ahead.

Gerhard Feldbauer emphasised that since the collapse of the socialist system in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in the years 1989-1990, the CPV and its members have stayed consistent on the road to socialism.

He noted that the CPV now has more than 5.1 million members, 60% of whom are young people, which refutes allegations that young Vietnamese are no longer interested in politics or socialism.

The German journalist reiterated that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has always been determined to persevere the path chosen by President Ho Chi Minh and the Party and people.

The National Assembly of Vietnam has also emphasised that economic growth and development do not mean moving away from the goal of building socialism.

The Vietnamese people agree with the viewpoints of the leaders of the Party and the State, that the country is moving forward on the path of building a society “truly for the people, not for exploitation and profit” - a society of “progress and equality, kindness, solidarity, and mutual assistance for human values.”

According to Gerhard Feldbauer, Vietnam is on its way toward a modern socialist-oriented industrialised economy. From its starting point as a poor nation due to war, Vietnam has become one of the world’s most vibrant and fastest-growing economies with annual growth of 6-8% (before the COVID-19 pandemic).

Since it began the renewal process, Vietnam has signed a number of bilateral deals and joined international organisations such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and most recently the European Union – Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). On the back of the EVFTA, Vietnam has become the EU’s second biggest trade partner in ASEAN. In 2018, Vietnam exported goods and services worth over EUR35 billion to the EU, mostly apparel, mobile phones and accessories and spent over EUR10 billion on goods from the bloc.

Regarding the challenges faced by the country on its path toward socialism, Feldbauer said the key point is to affirm the leadership of the CPV and defeat every attempt to lower or eliminate the role of the Party. He also suggested Vietnam crack down on corruption and stay close to the people in all aspects. He expressed his belief that under the CPV’s leadership, Vietnam will always overcome any difficult period in its history.

Feldbauer also underscored the great role of President Ho Chi Minh in every victory of Vietnam’s revolution, and lauded the tireless and unyielding fighting spirit of the Vietnamese people, considering it a prerequisite for the successes of Vietnam’s revolution.

Born in 1933, Gerhard Feldbauer used to work as a reporter of the German Democratic Republic’s ADN news agency in Hanoi. He and his wife - Irene, a photo correspondent, worked in Hanoi from 1967 to 1970. With a doctoral degree in Vietnamese history, he wrote 15 books, four of them about Vietnam.
