Government Issues Training Programs for English Teachers

The training program aims to help teachers to develop the necessary skills effectively, flexibly and in accordance with the culture and context of Vietnam, contributing to ensuring the quality of English language teaching.

The Ministry of Education and Training recently issued Decision No. 4159/QD-BGDDT promulgating the training course with certificate for foreign English teachers at foreign language and information technology centers in Vietnam.

Eligible applicants are native speakers with a college degree or higher; foreigners with a college degree in English or higher; foreigners with a college degree or higher and a foreign language competency certificate of level 5 or higher according to the 6-level foreign language competency framework used for Vietnam or an equivalent.

The training program aims to help educators develop English teaching skills effectively, flexibly and in accordance with the culture and context of Vietnam. Another goal is to meet the demand for training and certificates issues, contributing to ensuring the quality of English teaching at foreign language centers.

After completing the program, educators can apply key knowledge, methods and approaches in teaching English. They will also be able to analyze, evaluate, and adjust content and methods to suit learners in the context of teaching and learning English in Vietnam.

They can also apply skills to support teaching and learning flexibly and effectively, to analyze, evaluate, and adjust effective classroom management and organization skills that can support learning, develop lesson planning skills, and assessment skills.

Educators can use technology, learning materials and English teaching methods suitable for learners to develop the capacity and qualities of learners at the foreign language center. In addition, they are equipped with knowledge of positive working spirit, responsibility, cooperation, professionalism and flexible adaptability. Another benefit of the program is to support them learning and respecting Vietnamese customs and cultural traditions, complying with the provisions of Vietnamese law.

The program includes 10 topics on knowledge, methods and skills of teaching English and one internship. Some of the key topics are an overview of culture, the context of teaching and learning English in Vietnam, English teaching theory and methods. There are also methods of teaching English language knowledge, methods of teaching English skills, lessons on classroom management and applying information technology and developing teaching materials. Educators will also learn inspection and evaluation methods, English teaching methods for children and for teenagers, along with lesson planning methods. .

Total training duration is 160 lessons, each lesson is 45 minutes (equivalent to 120 teaching hours, each teaching hour is 60 minutes). At the end of the program, the level of achievement will be determined through tests (oral/written or appropriate form) and internship results. Scores are given on a 10-point scale.

To be eligible for assessment at the end of the program, educators must attend at least 80% of class time, complete learning, testing, and evaluation tasks, meet the requirements of the subject and the overall training program.

Those who score 5 points or more are considered to have met the requirements and are confirmed to have completed the training program. Those who are below this score are considered to be "unsatisfactory", thereby must be re-evaluated. A training certificate will be issued for those who completed the training program.

The institutions performing training tasks include educational universities with departments for English teacher training, centers with English teacher training departments and educational institutions that are allowed to train English teachers.

The Ministry of Education and Training also clearly states the requirements for the content and form of training documents, requirements for document editors, regulations on document appraisal, and requirements for lecturers and rapporteurs. Educational institutions are assigned to carry out training tasks, compile and evaluate documents and organize training, report training results to the Ministry of Education and Training before December 31 every year. These institutions are also responsible for ensuring the quality and conditions of the program implementation as required.

The management and issuance of certificates is carried out according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.
