Due to impacts of the cold spell and alpine winds, ice and frost appeared in mountainous areas of Vietnam's northern region, reported local newspapers.

Thick ice and frost have appeared on the peak of Phia Oac Mt. in the northern mountainous province of Cao Bang since early Feb. 20, as temperatures dropped to below zero degree Celsius.

At a height of 1,930m above sea level, Phja Oac is the roof of Cao Bang. Frost and ice are normal phenomena here in winter.

This is the first time frost has been seen in the area this year as nighttime temperatures drop to just about -2 to -5 degrees Celsius with light rain and strong winds.

Ice and frost also appeared in mountainous areas in Lao Cai and Yen Bai provinces on February 20.

Rain with cold wind, in Dong Van district, Ha Giang, brought the temperature to minus one degree Celsius, the trees here appeared frosty.

In particular, peach blossom gardens freeze from the base to the top. Flowers covered with a layer of ice create a beautiful fancy scene.

Frost continued to appear densely on the top of Mau Son (Lang Son province) in the morning of Feb. 21 when the temperature at 6 o'clock was -0.8 degrees Celsius, lower than the temperature at the same time on Feb. 20.

Mau Son mountainous area consists of nearly 80 mounts and hills, of which the highest peak is Phia Po 1,541m above sea level, followed by Phia Me, 1,520 m above sea level (or Mau Son - the Mother Mount), Tra Ky - the tourism center of 1,180m height or Phat Chi 1,100 m. Mau Son is located about 30km from Lang Son city and about 180km from Hanoi.

Frost can burn leaves and flowers, and damage fruits. If seriously, plants can be completely killed, causing loss of crop production.

A new cold spell is forecast to hit the northern and north-central regions of Vietnam on Feb. 22 night, causing chilly weather until Feb. 24, VNA reported Tuesday.

The mercury will drop to 8-11 degree Celsius at the lowest, even 3-6 or lower in mountainous areas where rains with snow may appear, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting

In the central region, areas from Quang Binh to Thua Thien-Hue provinces are likely to record showers and the lowest temperatures of 11-14 degree Celsius.

The elderly are advised to stay indoors to avoid the risk of a stroke, whilst residents of mountainous regions should refrain from engaging in outdoor activities and burning coal in closed rooms for heat.

Measures are conducted to protect crops, cattle, and aquatic farms, especially those in mountainous localities.
