Nguyen Thi Huong, Thai Ha Books, said that when attending major international book fairs around the world, her unit always brings valuable books recognized at domestic book awards to introduce to international readers.
“This action helps the world publishing industry pay more attention to Vietnam. They will find this is a good place for publishing,” Huong said.
At major international book fairs in the world such as Frankfurt (Germany) or Kolkata (India), domestic publishers strive to bring valuable books, introduce Vietnamese literature and culture, and seek cooperation opportunities with foreign publishing companies.
In 2020, Vietnam participates in Havana's International Book Fair (Cuba) - one of the major annual cultural events in Latin America - as an honored guest. The event is within the framework of activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations between Cuba and Vietnam (1960-2020).
After more than two months of preparation, eight Vietnamese publishers and two book companies brought nearly 700 titles with over 2,000 copies in Spanish, English, French, Vietnamese, and bilingual English-Vietnamese.
These are all books that introduce the friendship between Vietnam and Cuba, culture, literature, country and people of Vietnam from history to the present.
As the guest of honor, Vietnam has two pavilions placed in a special position at the fortress of San Carlos de la Cabaña - where the event is held.
Vietnam's pavilions are decorated with documents, images, and artifacts bearing national cultural identity, combined with modern sound and light effects to promote Vietnamese people and friendship between the two countries.
Recently, Vietnam attended the 17th Venezuela International Book Fair as an honored guest. Due to the pandemic situation, domestic publishers could not be present in person.
The Authority of Publication, Printing, and Distribution (Ministry of Information and Communications) has assigned units to deploy and coordinate to select and send suitable books to Venezuela. The Vietnamese Ambassador to Venezuela led the delegation and brought meaningful books to promote Vietnamese culture and people.
Within the framework of this event, the Vietnamese Embassy in Venezuela also had an exchange to introduce the publication Dien Bien Phu - Encuentro con la historia (Dien Bien Phu, Rendezvous With History) of General Vo Nguyen Giap.

In an online exchange forum on the topic of the "Vietnamese publishing industry", Carolus Wimmer, president of the Venezuela-Vietnam Friendship Association, said: "Vietnam is a heroic nation, a true example to follow in the fight for peace and socialism. Vietnam's participation in this Venezuela International Book Fair is an opportunity for our people to know more about your culture."
Earlier, during the opening ceremony, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro Moros affirmed that although Vietnamese publishers were not present at the book fair, he still felt the presence of Vietnam through the publications displayed at the pavilions.
Not only participating as guests of honor, even as member countries, domestic bookmakers also strive to find opportunities at major international book fairs around the world.
The Kolkata Book Fair (India) attracts more than two million visitors every year. In 2018, as one of the member countries participating in this event, Vietnam's publishing industry displayed 200 books in English, pictures illustrating Vietnamese landscapes and a number of photos recording President Ho Chi Minh' visits to India.
The Frankfurt Book Fair (Germany) is known as a major festival of the global publishing world. In 2005, Vietnamese publishers started participating in this event and realized that this was a big playground for the international publishing industry.
Over the years, a number of domestic book-making units have made great efforts to attend this event through online exchanges, with the desire to seek cooperation opportunities and introduce Vietnamese publications to the international market.
