According to Skymet Weather, a cyclonic circulation is over Northeast India over Assam and adjoining areas.

A trough is seen extending from south-central Maharashtra to Vidarbha to Chhattisgarh. There are no other active seasonal systems on the rest of the country.

During the next 24 hours, there will be some decrease in fog in Punjab and Haryana. Light to moderate fog will occur at some places over the next 24 hours in these two states.

In Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Northeast states, due to extremely dense fog, normal life is expected to be affected. In Madhya Pradesh, moderate to dense fog may occur at one or two places.

Cold wave conditions are likely to continue in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Saurashtra of Gujarat and parts of Kutch and Madhya Pradesh.

However, cold day conditions will be relieved in the plains states of North India including Uttar Pradesh and Gangetic plains, as day temperatures are expected to increase slightly.

Many parts of northwest India are recording significantly below normal temperatures, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). Cold wave and cold day conditions are likely to persist over northwest India till the weekend.

“Till around February 15, it’s not uncommon to record cold waves or cold day conditions but this winter has been particularly cold. October was the coldest in the past 58 years, November was the coldest in 71 years, December was fine but in January, we are consistently seeing minimum temperatures to be 3-4°C below normal which could be an effect of La Nina, a global phenomenon. The minimum temperature has dipped to 1.1°C once and 2.2°C twice this month. This week, the minimum temperature over Delhi will hover around 4-5°C,” said Kuldeep Shrivastava, head, regional weather forecasting centre.

“Another Western Disturbance is likely to bring snowfall to the Western Himalayan region from February 1 and may bring light rain to Delhi on February 3 following which, minimum temperatures are likely to fall again,” he added.

Cold, dry north-westerly winds are blowing over the northern plains and adjoining parts of central India during the next 3-4 days. Under its influence, cold day to severe cold day conditions are likely in isolated/some pockets over Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar during the next 2-3 days and over Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours.

Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions are likely in many pockets over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh during the next 3-4 days; the condition will improve thereafter. Cold wave conditions are likely in isolated pockets over Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra and Kutch during the next 3-4 days. Ground frost conditions are very likely over Punjab, Haryana and north Rajasthan during the next two days.

Dense to very dense fog is likely in some pockets over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh during the next 3-4 days. Dense fog is also very likely over Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura during the next 2-3 days; over north Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours and over Odisha during January 29 to 31.

A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect Western Himalayan region from February 1 onwards. Under its influence, scattered rain or snow with moderate thunderstorm and lightning is likely over the Western Himalayan region during February 1 to 3, Hindustan Times reported.

5-Day Nationwide Weather Forecast

According to Weather.com, dry weather is likely across most of India, apart from isolated to scattered rains, which are expected over Andaman & Nicobar Islands in this forecast period, and light rainfall that is on the cards over Eastern India and adjoining areas on Thursday and Friday, Light rain or snow is also expected over Northeast India on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, a fresh western disturbance could also bring light snow or rain over Northern India on Sunday and Monday.

Dense to very dense fog will persist over some pockets of North-Central India and isolated places across the Northernwestern plains on Thursday.

Low temperature conditions are likely to prevail over Northern, Central and Northeastern India in this period, and over Northwestern India from Thursday to Sunday.

Cold day to severe cold day conditions have been forecast over Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. On the other hand, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions have been forecast over Punjab, Haryana and East Rajasthan on Thursday and Friday.

Maximum temperatures will be 2-4°C below average over Northern, North-Central, and Northeastern India in this period, and over Northwestern India from Thursday to Sunday. Maximum temperatures will be near normal or slightly higher in other areas in this period.

Minimum temperatures will be below average over Central and Northeastern India in this period, and over Northern India and Northwestern India from Thursday to Saturday. Minimum temperatures will be higher over South-Eastern India on Thursday and Friday, and just slightly higher over Southern, South-Western and Northeastern India in this period.

Isolated rain/snow is possible over Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, whereas isolated showers are expected over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Dense fog is likely over isolated pockets of Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura.
