Italy's Emilia-Romagna Region: A Longtime Supporter of Vietnamese Independence

Within the framework of the Vietnam-Italy Year 2023 program in the Emilia-Romagna region (Italy) taking place on November 27-28, Vietnamese Ambassador to Italy Duong Hai Hung had a meeting with the regional leaders and city leaders to discuss economic, cultural and promotional cooperation activities.

Ambassador Duong Hai Hung expressed gratitude for the solidarity and support of the Emilia-Romagna region in general and the city of Reggio Emilia to Vietnam's previous struggle for independence, freedom, and unity as well as Vietnam's peace and reconstruction work in the present time.

The support was demonstrated through many donations of necessities, and medicine. Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Provisional Revolutionary Government Nguyen Thi Binh witnessed the signing of the agreement to between Reggio Emilia and Quang Tri, in 1972.

According to the Vietnamese diplomat, the good relations between Vietnam and the Emilia-Romagna region show not only in political fields but also in economic indicators. For example, Vietnam's trade turnover with the Emilia-Romagna region accounts for 40% of Vietnam's trade with Italy.

The good friendship between Vietnam and Italy in general and the Emilia-Romagna region in particular are based on the common interests, priorities, and many highly complementary advantages between the two sides in many fields. Ambassador Duong Hai Hung hoped that the governments and businesses of both sides would continue to strengthen specific cooperation through activities such as working visits of the Emilia-Romagna government and businesses to Vietnam, and vice versa, and promoting cooperation between localities of the two sides.

In response, the leaders of the Emilia-Romagna region also emphasized the valuable solidarity that the governments and people of both sides have established in the past. This is a solid basis for the two sides to continue promoting specific and practical cooperation. There are currently many favorable conditions such as the dynamic economic development of both Vietnam and the Emilia-Romagna region, the adoption of trade and investment support agreements such as the European Union (EU)-Vietnam free trade (EVFTA) and the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA). The two sides also share many priorities such as sustainable agriculture, energy green energy, and innovation in general.

Known as the “Valley of Engines” and “Food Valley” of Italy, the Emilia-Romagna region is one of the most important economic engines with a very well-balanced economy, including the country's largest agricultural sector. It has a long tradition of automobile and motor vehicle production. mechanical engineering with large car and machinery manufacturing companies such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, Dallara, Ducati, Landi Renzo... and service industries such as education and training, banking, and insurance.

The Emilia-Romagna region is currently promoting green and sustainable economic development policies by prioritizing investment in areas such as environmental protection, renewable energy, digital transformation, and smart agriculture.

In the field of green energy, the Vietnamese Embassy in Italy has coordinated with the Italy-Vietnam Foundation and the Asian Research Institute of the University of Bologna to organize a roundtable discussion on “Vietnam's Sustainable Development and Opportunities for Emilia-Romagna, focusing on the field of renewable energy and hydrogen.”

In the discussion, Ambassador Duong Hai Hung presented the energy transition policy in Vietnam. The Southeast Asian country announced its commitments to green, sustainable economic development, adaptation to climate change at the 26th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26),

Emphasizing the need for international cooperation with strong partners, including Italy in general and the Emilia-Romagna region in particular, delegates from the Emilia-Romagna region introduced renewable energy models and solutions, including hydrogen, and discussed the potential for cooperation with Vietnam in this field.

In addition, on this occasion, Ambassador Duong Hai Hung had a meeting with the President of the Reggio Emilia Chamber of Commerce Stefano Landi, along with economic agencies, business associations of Reggio Emilia, and the University. Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE).

The two sides witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Institute of Asian Studies (University of Bologna) and the Italy-Vietnam Foundation, aiming to promote research cooperation between the two countries.
