Japanese Celebrate 14th Annual Vietnam Festival

On June 4, the 14th Vietnam Festival in Japan was launched at Yoyogi Park in Tokyo. The event was attended by former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, Japanese politicians, and people of the two countries.

In his opening remark, the Vietnamese Ambassador to Japan Vu Hong Nam, co-chair of the festival's executive board, highlighted the festival's significance in developing the friendship between Vietnam and Japan . The event, which was held on a smaller scale for the last two years due to the pandemic, has now revived to its pre-pandemic state.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda expressed his delight to witness Vietnam's strong economic recovery after the pandemic. He was pleased to know that the number of Vietnamese people in Japan was increasing. The former prime minister expressed hope for the relations and believed that cooperation between the two countries would develop in the coming time.

Japanese Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs Shingo Miyake said Japan-Vietnam's relations were at the best stage in history, which was shown in the Vietnamese Festival's spirit.

In his interview with Vietnam News Agency, Ambassador Vu Hong Nam said: “This is the first festival held at Yoyogi Park after the two-year pandemic, therefore it has welcomed a large number of attendees, far beyond our expectations. This is the first time in two years that we welcome famous Vietnamese actors to perform, which attracted a lot of Vietnamese and Japanese people."

Japanese MP Yoichiro Aoyagi, a co-chair of the festival's executive committee, said: "After two years of being held in other locations, the Vietnam Festival in Japan has returned to Yoyogi Park with the presence of many leading artists of Vietnam."

"Although the pandemic has been partly controlled, it is not yet over. The peak was handled, but we must not be reckless. We have thoroughly applied measures to prevent infection such as keeping distance, measuring body temperature, and disinfecting. Everyone proactively protects. themselves so that they can enjoy delicious food with peace of mind and blend into the festive atmosphere I hope the festival will be safe but fun, in the spirit of “Living with Covid-19”.

At the festival, in addition to Vietnamese food and tropical fruits, attendees can enjoy cultural and artistic performances by leading artists of the two countries.

To ensure the festival goes on safely, pandemic prevention regulations remain as last year. The Executive Board requires all attendees to strictly comply with the pandemic prevention measures issued by the Japanese Government and Tokyo authorities such as masks and practicing social distancing.

Attending the festival for the first time, Chiaki Midorikawa, a Japanese teacher in Chiba, said: “I find the Vietnamese ao dai very beautiful. Vietnamese food tastes very good.”

The Vietnam Festival in Japan was first held in 2008 at the initiative of the late Senator Matsuda on the 35th anniversary of Vietnam - Japan's diplomatic relations. As one of the annual festivals in Tokyo, the event promotes Vietnamese cuisine to the Japanese people culture and mutual understanding between the people the two countries.
