The Four Words of Affection that Connect Vietnam and Laos

The Pathet Lao newspaper and the e-newspaper of the Lao News Agency (KPL) on September 10 ran an article praising the Vietnam-Laos relationship.

The article said Vietnam and Laos are neighbors connected by mountains and rivers, and boast close bonds in culture and history. The two people have stood side by side during the past struggles for national independence as well as the present cause of national defense, construction, and development.

The Laos-Vietnam relationship was founded by the great President Ho Chi Minh, President Kaysone Phomvihane, and President Souphanouvong, and has been built upon by generations of leaders of the two Parties, two States, and the people of the two countries to become a symbol of international solidarity and a precious asset of the two countries. It is a great source of strength for the two countries, serving as a foundation for Vietnam and Laos to develop together, and pass on to future generations.

The article commented that the visit to Vietnam by General Secretary and President of Laos Thongloun Sisoulith, which was made immediately after the State visit of To Lam to Laos as President in July 2024, is a vivid demonstration of the great friendship, special solidarity between the two Parties, two States, and peoples of Laos and Vietnam.

The visit was carried out in the context of the two Parties and two countries vigorously implementing the Resolutions of each Party and preparing for Party Congresses at all levels, towards the National Congress. The Laos-Vietnam relationship is developing well and has achieved many important achievements.

The article highlighted Vietnam’s consistent policy of giving the top priority to developing its cooperation with Laos in an intensive, effective, and sustainable manner, and considering this a strategic task, stressing that the two sides will tighten their coordination in terms of strategic policies and guidelines, and work to enhance mutual trust.

Amidst the rapid and unpredictable regional and international situation, the two countries have shared the view on the strategic importance of the special solidarity, and consented to strengthen their comprehensive cooperation.

According to the article, as both countries enter a new phase, the global and regional situation is expected to continue evolving rapidly and complexly. To ensure the successful implementation of the renewal process in each country and the resolutions of each party's National Congress, both sides continue to affirm the importance and strategic significance of the special relationship in the new context, based on the consistent principles that the two parties have agreed upon.

Both sides have agreed to further promote the comprehensive Laos-Vietnam cooperative relationship on the basis of promoting independence, self-reliance, equal and mutually beneficial cooperation, while combining the special nature of the Laos-Vietnam relationship with international practices.

The article concluded that Thongloun Sisoulith’s visit is expected to advance the bilateral relations to a new height, for the interests of each country’s people, and for peace, stability, and development in the region, and the world at large.

The same day, other major newspapers like Pasaxon and Vientiane Mai, and radio and television channels in Laos made extensive coverage of the visit by the top leader of Laos, calling it a milestone of the bilateral ties.
