The Vietnamese community in Suriname was formed in 1999, mostly consisting of Vietnamese crew members in fishing boats of Suriname, Korea, and India. After fishing in the waters of Suriname, they decided to stay and work here. The special thing of the Vietnamese community in Suriname is that they all come from the sea of Nghi Xuan, Ha Tinh.

Currently, the Vietnamese community here owns 5 fishing boats, they are happy to have asserted themselves in the country of Suriname. Captain Ngo Van Quynh said that each trip to sea if favorable, can catch 10-15 tons of shrimp, each fishing boat creates jobs for about 20 Vietnamese workers and seafood processors on the shore.
