Responding to the “Joining hands to support Vietnam in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic” program initiated by the Vietnamese Association in Hungary in late August 2021, Vu Quy Duong, a Vietnamese businessman in Hungary, donated 12.5 tons of medical equipment worth US$ 380,000.

Duong is the director of Vimpex, a major Hungarian business, and president of the Vietnamese Association in Hungary. For decades, he has been proactive in community activities, especially in calling for social support for Vietnam and Hungary.

Duong’s donations to aid the Covid fight in Vietnam included syringes, N95 facemasks and antibody Covid-19 test kits, which were necessary equipment in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic in Vietnam. The bulk of medical equipment has been handed over to the Embassy of Vietnam in Hungary to be transported to Vietnam.

The handover ceremony was held on Sept. 22 at the headquarter of Vimpex in Budapest, attended by Ambassador of Vietnam to Hungary Nguyen Thi Bich Thao, staff of the embassy and key members of the Vietnamese Association in Hungary.

Speaking at the ceremony, Duong noted that he considered his contributions to “signify the dedication of a Vietnamese for the homeland when witnessing the challenges that the country and people have been facing.”

Ambassador of Vietnam to Hungary Bich Thao believed Duong’s donation was “valuable and meaningful” and “showed the sentiments and support of overseas Vietnamese to the community in the homeland.”

The ambassador also promised to transport the medical equipment, which weighed 12.5 tons, to Vietnam as soon as possible so they could be used effectively and meaningfully in the fight against Covid in Vietnam.

Via the Executive Committee of the Vietnamese Association in Hungary, Ambassador Bich Thao also expressed her appreciation for the sentiments and contribution of the Vietnamese community in Hungary to Vietnam.

At the ceremony, the Permanent Vice-president of the Association Phung Kim San provided a report on the association’s two-week campaign, which attracted significant support from the Vietnamese community and Hungarian friends in the country.

In addition to Duong’s medical equipment contributions, a total of VND 850 million would be sent directly to Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong province to assist the frontline medical staff and people heavily affected by the pandemic.

In the past 1.5 years, despite the heavy impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on socioeconomic activities in Hungary, the Vietnamese Association has called for donations for three major Hungarian hospitals to aid Covid prevention and the communities in three provinces in Vietnam affected by natural disasters. In particular, the association has been recognized by Hungarian authorities as a public welfare organization.

While facing mounting challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, numerous Vietnamese individuals and businesses living and working in Hungary have been making significant contributions to support local authorities and communities. This support has been honored and praised by the Hungarian government and media, contributing to elevating the image of the Vietnamese community.
