That was the voice of Trinh Thi Huyen, Head of the Ket Tam volunteer club urging members to carry 580 Mid-Autumn gifts to the car. The cars left at 20.05, beginning the journey "Mid-Autumn Festival to villages 2020" to Ta Sin Thang Ethnic Minority Semi-Boarding Primary School at Ta Sin Thang Commune, Tua Chua District, Dien Bien province.

Trinh Thi Huyen said that “For urban children, Mid-Autumn Festival is so familiar; however, for upland children, it is luxurious. With the hope of holding meaningful Mid-Autumn Festival for ethnic children, annually, Ket Tam volunteer club coordinates with Thien Tam volunteer club and benefactors to organize “Mid-Autumn Festival to villages” programs. This is the third year we have organized such programs”.

After a 14-hour journey traversing rugged passes, we reached Ta Sin Thang Ethnic Minority Semi-Boarding Primary School. Despite relatively tired after a long journey, volunteers felt excited to make preparation for the full moon festival. Ta Sin Thang is an upland commune located to the north of Tua Chua district. The commune is enveloped by craggy mountain ranges shrouded in the dense mist. Ta Sin Thang is home to 85 percent of Mong ethnic group and a small number of Xa Phang ethnic people. The locals here mainly live on one rice and one corn crop. There are up to 70% of poor households in Ta Sin Thang Commune.

Ca Van Hung, a teacher at Ta Sin Thang Primary school said that the students here have suffered from the shortage of facilities and learning items.

With the assistance of teachers and indigenous people, we quickly completed the preparation work. The local boys helped to set up the stage; meanwhile, the female teachers and children excitedly fit star-shaped lanterns. Seeing the joy in the children’s eyes, I was reminded of my feeling when receiving the star lantern for the first time from my mom.

Ket Tam Volunteer Club presented 14 bicycles to poor students,

We decided to organize the program earlier than expected as it was getting darker and darker. Since 17.00, the schoolyard was packed with participators including both students and their family.

The full moon festival started with the song named “Chiếc đèn ông sao” (Star lantern). The children took off their timidity and quickly engaged in the lion dance. Besides art performances and “Phá cỗ” (Enjoying mooncakes and fruits), the organizing boards presented 580 packs of gifts, 14 bicycles, 200 blankets, 50 schoolbags, nearly 1,000 moon cakes, 3,000 notebooks among other to teachers and students of Ta Sin Thang Primary School.

Giang A Long, a schoolboy from 3A2 class, one of 14 students receiving the bicycle bashfully told me that “I feel so happy to get this gift”. For poor students like Long, the bicycle is so valuable helping him to shorten the moving time from his house to school.

The simple but cozy celebration ended with the delighted laughter, the campfire and dance performance. One more Mid-Autumn Festival elapsed. We will continue our journey to hold many other Mid-Autumn Festivals for children all over the country. The melody of the “Star lantern” song kept haunting me on the way back to Hanoi. For me, the moon today seemed to be brighter.
