According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Ha Cong Tuan, the year 2020 has an important meaning, when the Party Congress at all levels take place towards the 13th National Party Congress; it is also a breakthrough year to complete the 5-year plan 2016 - 2020. The basic target for 2020 of the agriculture and rural development sector is the GDP growth rate of 2.8-3%. In particular, the sector strives to increase the production value of agriculture, forestry and fishery to about 2.9 - 3.05%. Also, the export turnover of agriculture, forestry and fishery aims at reaching over USD 41 billion, according to Kinh te Do thi.
In order to successfully achieve the objectives of agricultural export, Deputy Minister Ha Cong Tuan said that the agriculture and rural development sector will continue to accelerate the restructuring of the industry, improve productivity, quality of agricultural products, production and business efficiency. The sector will also develop and expand the official export markets of key products.

In addition, the sector will actively negotiate to open export markets, stabilize traditional markets, seek and expand potential markets; and minimize dependence on certain markets. Moreover, the sector will actively deploy and effectively exploit opportunities of free trade agreements, strengthening market development activities.
Along with that, the sector will renew and develop organizational forms of production and business in agriculture. The focus is on developing businesses, developing forms of cooperation, linking production and consumption of agricultural products along the value chain, connecting global consumption systems. At the same time, the sector will prepare to boost exports when the CPTPP and EVFTA Agreements come into effect.

The MARD reported that in the first 5 months of 2020, the total import-export turnover of agriculture, forestry and fisheries products reached about USD 27.7 billion, with more than USD 15.5 billion in export and nearly USD 3.3 billion in trade surplus.
Although COVID-19 has left a broad negative impact on the market, growth has been observed in agricultural product export, including coffee with USD 1.36 billion (up 2.2%); rice, USD 1.4 billion (up 18.9%); vegetables, USD 310 million (up 17.5%); cinnamon, USD 66 million (up 16.6%); and rattan, bamboo and sedge mats, USD 197 million (up 4.7%), Dang cong san reported.
