Repatriation flights continue for stranded Vietnamese citizens

The Vietnamese Embassy in Indonesia partnered with local authorities to repatriate more than 210 Vietnamese citizens stranded by COVID-19 on July 29.

Their flight, operated by Vietjet Air, landed at the Can Tho International Airport in the Mekong Delta and all passengers and the plane crew underwent health checks before being transferred to quarantine facilities in line with regulations.

The passengers included children aged under 18, the elderly, sick people, pregnant women, students completing their study, workers with expired visas and labour contracts, stranded tourists, and fishermen who had been detained by Indonesian authorities and have completed their prison sentences.

In April, more than 100 Vietnamese citizens in Indonesia were also repatriated on a Vietjet Air flight. On the flight to Indonesia, Vietjet Air brought home some Indonesian citizens.

Indonesia is currently the biggest COVID-19 hotspot in Southeast Asia, with more than 100,000 cases.

More than 16,000 Vietnamese nationals have been brought home from 50 countries and territories on 60 flights since the country started repatriating citizens stranded abroad on April 10.

Dinh Viet Thang, head of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, said 50 more flights would bring another 13,000 people home by the end of next month.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has hailed Vietnam for its quick response to the latest COVID-19 outbreak and bringing back its stranded citizens from abroad.

Kidong Park, the WHO Representative in Vietnam, said WHO respects Vietnam’s decision to bring home hundreds more from stricken areas, including 219 from Equatorial Guinea, of whom more than half are infected, and 226 from Uzbekistan, of whom around 100 are infected./.
