The Party Committee of Navy Region 5 on June 27 organized a conference to summarize 10 years of implementing Resolution No. 689 of the Central Military Commission and Resolution No. 11 of the Navy Party Committee on natural disaster prevention and control, and search and rescue operations up to 2020 and beyond.

Rear Admiral Nguyen Huu Thoan, Secretary of the Party Committee and Regional Political Commissar chaired the conference in Phu Quoc city of the southern province of Kien Giang.

Over the past years, the Party Committee and Command of Navy Region 5 have closely coordinated with the Party committees and authorities of localities in the area to effectively implement Resolution No. 689 of the Central Military Commission and Resolution No. 11 of the Navy Party Committee.

Notably, the Navy Region 5 has improved the awareness and responsibility of officers, soldiers, and citizens regarding natural disaster prevention and control, and search and rescue operations; developed plans to prevent and control natural disasters, epidemics, search and rescue, prevention and control of explosions and forest fires closely and seriously.

They regularly practice to handle circumstances in a timely and effectively manner; proactively and closely coordinate with party committees, local authorities, agencies and units in the area in responding to incidents, natural disasters, disasters, rescue works. At the same time, invest, purchase, receive, manage, and effectively use equipments to respond to and mitigate the effects of accidents, natural disasters, and catastrophes, as well as to conduct search and rescue operations.

In the past 10 years, Command of Navy Region 5 has deployed 9,282 officers, soldiers, and 145 vehicles to participate in 146 firefighting and rescuing operations. The officers and soldiers promptly extinguished fires for more than 200 hectares of forest and dozens of people's houses; as well as rescued 43 fishermen and 55 vehicles in distress at sea.

Speaking at the conference, Rear Admiral Nguyen Huu Thoan highly appreciated the pro-active efforts of the armed forces of Navy Region 5 in natural disaster prevention and control, and search and rescue operations in recent times.

He also requested that in the future, the Party Committee and Command of Navy Region 5 continue to thoroughly implement the resolutions, directives, and legal documents on the work.

Specifically, the Party committees and chains of command at all levels should focus on raising awareness among officers, soldiers, and local citizens, preparing vehicles, logistics, and technical materials; and closely coordinating with functional agencies, local authorities, and forces stationed in the area to effectively respond to natural disasters so that they would stay ready to complete all missions; promptly praising and rewarding collectives and individuals with outstanding achievements, contributing to encouraging staff and soldiers successfully completed their assigned tasks.
