Naval Region 5: Bring Drinking Water to Residents of Remote Islands

To deal with the lack of water for daily use on southwest sea islands, on March 24 and 25, freshwater tankers of the Naval Region 5 of the Vietnam People's Navy brought free water to the people of Hon Chuoi island. This activity helped people overcome difficulties and stabilize their lives during drought days.

Kim Ngoc Dung, a resident of Hon Chuoi Island, said: "Hon Chuoi Island has no freshwater lakes or wells. The people's daily water source depends on rainwater. This year, the hot weather has lasted for a long time so the stored water is not enough. The situation has significantly affected people's daily lives."

According to Dung, due to the lack of running water, people had to sail to the mainland to transport water to the island, which not only took time and effort but also cost money, making people's lives even more difficult.

Understanding the people's difficulties, the Navy Region 5 Command sent Ship 526 and dozens of officers and soldiers of Brigade 127 and Regiment 551 to overcome the long and stormy distance to transport 130,000 liters of free fresh water from Phu Quoc Island to people, armed forces, and fishermen in the Southwestern waters.

Hong Nhat Truong, a fisherman on Hon Chuoi island, said: "We are happy to hear that the Navy ship is providing water to our people. Every year when there is a drought, people receive timely help from the soldiers. Not only do they provide free water, they also help deliver it to the homes of the elderly and young children."

Due to the specific terrain and economic conditions, the people of Hon Chuoi island cannot build reinforced concrete water storage like on the mainland. Therefore, they utilized everything to transport and store water.

“Early in the morning, when the sun had not yet risen, we got up to prepare items such as buckets, pails, basins, and plastic cans to store water. This year's dry season is forecast to last long, so every house is trying to store as much water as possible to serve daily activities," said Kim Ngoc Dinh.

Rear Admiral Nguyen Huu Thoan, Political Commissar of Navy Region 5, said: "Over the past years, the Navy Region 5 Command has sent dozens of ships and hundreds of officers and soldiers to the islands to provide free fresh water to people. The unit also donated thousands of bottles of filtered water and many other meaningful gifts to fishermen, families under preferential treatment policy, and families in difficult circumstances on the islands. These acts of kindness have tightened the solidarity between the army and people, cheered and encouraged people to go to sea and settle on the islands, contributing with the forces to firmly protect the sacred sovereignty of the Fatherland's sea and islands."

Hon Chuoi Island is located in Song Doc town, Tran Van Thoi district, Ca Mau province, located nearly 32 km west of the mainland, an area of about 7sqkm. The highest point above sea level is nearly 170 m. Hon Chuoi is one of the important forefront islands in the southwest sea of Vietnam. The island has complex terrain, high slopes, harsh weather conditions, little rain, and lots of sunshine, therefore, the people here still have difficult living conditions.
