The Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) will provide more than VND1 billion ($42,612) for the central province of Thua Thien-Hue to help the locality reduce plastic waste as well as its impacts under a project launched recently.

Under the project on plastic waste reduction, 350 households in Phong Binh commune, Phong Dien district, will also receive support in developing the traditional craft of sedge mat weaving, thereby improving their living standards.

The provincial People’s Committee has recently issued a decision approving the reception of the non-refundable aid from the Norwegian organization.

The project is intended to help residents in Phong Binh commune, Phong Dien district, promote the traditional craft, create jobs for them, and improve their living standards.

It is also expected to change the consumer behavior of local residents by using environmentally friendly products made from the grass-like plant, instead of plastic products, especially single-use items, matching the directions of mitigating impacts of plastic waste set by the nation and the province in particular, thus contributing to environmental protection.

The 360 households are from Ru Hop, Dong Trung Tay Ho, Ta Huu Tu, Tay Phuc, Trieu Quy, and Dong My villages, and a cooperative in Phong Binh commune, Phong Dien district.

They will be equipped with machines and sets of protective gear, among others, and undergo training to improve their skills.

The People's Committee has also assigned the provincial Union of Friendship Organisations to receive and materialize the project in accordance with regulations.

The province has paid due attention to the restoration of several craft villages like Thanh Tien which makes paper flowers and Pho Trach mattress-making village, and traditional Ao Dai tailoring, and lacquer, among others.

Further efforts have been made to protect the Zeng weaving of the Ta Oi ethnic minority in the Nam Dong and A Luoi districts, which was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2017.

Thua Thien-Hue is currently home to 86 craft villages specializing in 57 traditional handicrafts. The villages have helped increase locals’ income while pushing the rural economic structure shifting toward industrialization and modernization./.
