The Norwegian People’s Aid/Project RENEW (NPA/RENEW) recently deployed four clearance teams to undertake a critical and high impact task in Quang Tri province's Vinh Linh district.

Vinh Linh district was called “bomb bag" during the resistance war against the US imperialists. The clearance work is designed to safely release land back to productive use, including by clearing it from mines and other explosive remnants of the war, to help restore agricultural livelihoods, contribute to the area’s economic development.

This confirmed contaminated area, spanning four villages across Kim Thach, Trung Nam, and Vinh Thai communes, poses a serious threat to local communities, who rely on the land for rice, vegetables, and perennial trees.

The teams have made significant progress during several first days of operations, successfully clearing over 37,000 square meters. They have safely disposed of several hazardous items, which included detonating a rocket discovered just 25 centimeters below the surface, along with three cluster munitions and three other types of explosive ordnance.

The total area that needs to be cleared is nearly 1.4 million square meters. When completed in December 2024, the land will be handed over to local communities, free from explosive ordnance threats, and allow for safe and productive use of the land, fostering further development in the locality.

The success of this operation will positively impact the lives of 1,277 people, including 327 men, 368 women, 306 boys, and 276 girls. The NPA/RENEW operation will ensure a safer and brighter future for families and the entire community.

According to PANO, Vinh Linh was the locality most fiercely suffering from the destructive war of the US imperialists. According to statistics, on average, each resident in the district had “to stand” seven tons of bombs.

Although the war ended nearly half a decade ago, there is still a large amount of ammunition, bombs, and explosives under the ground in this area, threatening people’s lives. Therefore, mine clearance is paid special attention to before the construction of major projects.
