Italian Ambassador to Vietnam Antonio Alessandro handed over the merit to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Nhat Quang at a ceremony held in Hanoi on Nov.11.

A Vietnamese has been awarded one of Italy’s highest civic honors, Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy (Cavaliere dell'Ordine della Stella d'Italia) conferred by the President of the Republic of Italy Sergio Mattarella, through the Ambassador of Italy at a ceremony held in Hanoi on Nov. 11.

Under the authorization of the President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella, Ambassador of Italy Antonio Alessandro awarded the Order of the Star of Italy to Associate Professor Dr. Bui Nhat Quang, President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, Chairman of the Vietnam - Italy Friendship Association for his contributions in strengthening the cooperation relations between Vietnam - Italy in the fields of culture, science, and technology as well as people-to-people diplomacy.

Ambassador Antonio Alessandro expressed his honor to award the Knighthood of the Order of the Star of Italy to Quang, emphasizing that this is one of the highest recognitions awarded by the Italian Government to foreigners making significant contributions to strengthening the friendship between Italy and other countries.

According to the diplomat, Quang holds two responsibilities: President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and the Vietnam - Italy Friendship Association. In the process of fulfilling two responsibilities, Quang has always shown his interest in strengthening relations with Italy, implementing many cultural activities to create a bridge between the two countries, especially in the fields of culture and academia. Under the promotion of Quang, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology has organized a number of very meaningful exhibitions, one of which was attended by Undersecretary of State for Defence of Italy Angelo Tofalo, during his working trip to Vietnam.

Expressing his honor and thanks to the State of Italy and Ambassador Antonio Alessandro, Quang said that this is a recognition of his contributions to the development of the close friendship and relations between Vietnam and Italy.

“It has been 25 years since I first arrived in Italy to begin my studies at the University of Trento in 1996. It has been a long journey and it is also a time for me to have experiences about Italy, a great culture, and an expressive language that helps me improve my understanding so that when returned to Vietnam, I have worked better and better and is able to contribute more to the bilateral cooperation”, said Ass. Prof., Dr. Bui Nhat Quang.

During the 1990s, Italy actively supported the expansion of cooperation relations between Vietnam and the European Union as well as helped Vietnam in the process of normalizing relations, financial and monetary institutions, and international trade. Vietnam also has played the role of a gateway to Italy, thereby developing cooperative relations with Southeast Asia, Quang added.

2013 marked a particularly important event as the two countries signed an agreement on a strategic partnership. This is the foundation for bilateral relations to expand to most fields. In the field of scientific cooperation, the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences and its affiliated units, especially the European Research Institute, have been implementing many research cooperation projects with Italian partners, Quang shared.

The Standing Board of the Vietnam - Italy Friendship Association attended the event and congratulated President Bui Nhat Quang.

"For the Vietnam-Italy Friendship Association, 2021 is also the 35th anniversary of the association's establishment, and people-to-people diplomacy activities have brought about many remarkable results, contributing to enhancing the presence of the Italian culture in Vietnam and vice versa, helping Italians understand more about Vietnam. As the President of the Vietnam-Italy Friendship Association, I, along with the association's Standing Committee and members, are trying our best to further promote this good traditional friendship", emphasized Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Nhat Quang.
