Ivory Coast, also known as Cote d’Ivoire, officially the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, is one of the leading economies in West Africa and has great potential for economic and trade cooperation with Vietnam.

President of Cote d’Ivoire Alassane Ouattara has spoken highly of Vietnam's achievements in socio-economic development and international integration, affirming that it has always been a model for his country, VNA reported Monday.

During a recent meeting with Vietnamese Ambassador to Morocco and Cote d’Ivoire Dang Thi Thu Ha who presented letter of credentials to him, Ouattara expressed his hope that Vietnam will share experience with his country, especially in agriculture, to help the western African country ensure sustainable food security.

He also called on Vietnamese enterprises to build cashew nut and cocoa processing factories in Cote d'Ivoire, saying that he believes Ambassador Ha will be a bridge to contribute to further expanding the bilateral relations between the two countries.

For her part, the Vietnamese diplomat conveyed greetings from President Nguyen Xuan Phuc to Ouattara, and congratulated the President and people of Cote d'Ivoire on the achievements in national development they made in recent times.

Ha affirmed that Cote d'Ivoire is one of Vietnam's leading trade partners in Africa, and Vietnam always wishes to strengthen its friendship and cooperation with the African nation in all fields.

Earlier, the Vietnamese ambassador had meetings with many officials of the host country, discussed measures to further foster the friendship and bilateral cooperation in the coming time, and agreed to promote the organisation of visits of the Prime Minister and the President of the National Assembly of Cote d'Ivoire to Vietnam, as well as a political consultation meeting between the two countries in 2023.

With a population of nearly 26.5 million people, this is a country with strong commodity consumption, but its requirements for product standards are not too strict.

Cote d'Ivoire is one of the leading economies in West Africa. The market of approximately 26.5 million consumers has a strong demand for goods imports, while it has no strict requirements for product standards. Vietnamese exports to Cote d'Ivoire have been increasing in recent years, ranking first among French-speaking African markets.

Cote d'Ivoire is rich in natural resources, with an abundant source of raw materials for many manufacturing industries that Vietnam can access and exploit, including some products that Vietnam has been importing with high volumes such as raw cashew nuts, cotton, and raw materials for animal feed.

The May 2019 enforcement of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement with the participation of 54 countries is believed to create plenty of opportunities for Vietnamese commodities to make inroads into Cote d'Ivoire and other African countries.

The country is Vietnam’s second-largest trading partner in Africa and the fourth-largest export market in this continent. The two way trade between Cote d'Ivoire and Vietnam topped USD 1 billion per year. Vietnam imports cashew, cotton, and raw materials, and exports rice, and consumer goods to the country.

Vietnam and Cote d'Ivoire set up diplomatic ties in 1975. Ivory Coast is Vietnam’s second-largest trading partner in Africa, after South Africa, and the fourth largest export market of Vietnam in this continent, after South Africa, Egypt and Ghana.
