Reviving Hoi An's International Tourism

In the Post-Covid Era, Hoi An continues to be a shining example of Vietnamese tourism for the international community.

Tourism in Hoi An city (Quang Nam province) has reached a similar state to the period before the Covid-19 pandemic, in which international visitors accounted for more than 70%. The entire tourism industry's revenue reached VND 4,538.6 billion (more than US $180 million), an increase of 9.64% over the same period in 2022.

Vice Chairman of Hoi An city People's Committee Nguyen Van Lanh believed this is thanks to removing entry and exit bottlenecks for international visitors. In particular, visa exemption policy and new electronic visa issuance became effective from August 15, 2023. Also, the implementation of Resolution 82 of the Government has contributed to the tourism industry, leading to a gradual recovery for tourism in Hoi An.

In 2023, Hoi An welcomed 4 million visitors, an increase of 99.79% over the same period from the year before. Out of the 4 million tourists who visited Hoi An city in 2023, 3 million of them were from a different country, proving Hoi An’s international appeal.

The total number of visitors buying tickets to visit destinations reached more than 3.2 million, an increase of 130.53%. Among them, nearly 2.6 million were international visitors, an increase of 304.58% over the same period. The total number of visitors recorded were more than 1.5 million, an increase of 100.47% over the same period. 1.276 million of them were international visitors.

Hoi An strives to welcome 4.3 million visitors in 2024, of which international visitors reach more than 3.2 million.

South Korea is the leading market bringing international tourists to Hoi An with 215,305 visitors (20.65%), followed by Taiwan (China) with 137,754 visitors (13.21%) and Australia with 83,875 visitors ( 8.05%) in second and third place respectively.

Visitors from England, France, Germany, and Spain also account for a high market share. In particular, European tourist groups increased in the last months of 2023.

In 2023, Hoi An city also recorded a rapid increase from neighboring countries in the ASEAN bloc such as Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia. Malaysian tourists ranked 5th among countries sending the most tourists to Hoi An.

International tourists' impressions about Hoi An city helps build its reputation. Hoi An has been praised by the Indian newspaper as being "picturesque." It is considered the perfect destination for culture enthusiasts to freely explore.
