Fishermen Confident to Set Sail under Border Guard Law

The Republic of Korea (RoK) supports Vietnam's efforts in fighting illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities, as recommended by the European Commission (EC) (Photo: VNA).

In 2023, Vietnam was the third largest seafood exporter to the RoK with a value of roughly US $800 million, primarily consisting of shrimp, shrimp meat, and octopus. Also in 2023, Vietnam became the fifth largest source of seafood imports from the RoK, valued at some US $240 million.

He shared that the RoK Government plans to work with major Korean companies like Lotte Mart in Ho Chi Minh City to launch trade promotion initiatives that will benefit both sides.

Also, he reaffirmed the RoK's commitment to building long-term partnerships with Vietnam to develop a sustainable aquaculture sector. Regarding the ongoing technical cooperation projects between the two countries, the project valued at 3 billion KRW (US $2.1 billion), running from 2022 to 2026, aims to improve aquaculture practices through technology transfer.

In particular, it is an effort to restore crustacean (a type of shellfish) farming in the northern coastal region of Vietnam, where production has recently decreased sharply due to overfishing and environmental pollution. The project will provide technical assistance and technology to improve the productivity of crustacean farming in coastal salt marsh areas.

Presenting the RoK’s ongoing efforts and experiences against IUU fishing, he said the RoK Government advocates for upholding the rule of law, information sharing, public awareness campaigns, and refraining from violence in enforcement efforts. Kang stressed that RoK plans to strengthen the capabilities of the Asian region to address IUU fishing and will collaborate closer with countries like Vietnam in this regard.
