Over the years, Vietnam has consistently complied with the 1982 United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and taken peaceful measures in line with this treaty to safeguard its sea areas, a Foreign Ministry official has said.

The year 2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (UNCLOS 1982) and also the 25th year since Vietnam ratified the convention.

Vietnam actively participated in the negotiation process and building of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and has made significant efforts in enforcing the pact.

Vietnam commits to respecting and fully implementing regulations of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982 UNCLOS), said Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, head of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the UN.

Vietnam is concerned about current complicated developments in the East Sea, especially large-scale construction activities, which change the natural characteristics of some structures in the sea, destroy marine environment and ecosystem and seriously affecting peace, stability and security in the region, thus causing great concerns among ASEAN member nations and countries inside and outside the region, Ambassador Nga stated.
