Football is often called the king of sports, but in Chieng Chung and Muong Chanh - two communes of Son La province, participating in the final match of this football tournament, the new “queens” arose.

The event, is not just about sporting fun, important as that may be in itself. It is also arranged to spread awareness about empowerment and social cohesion.

Starting from April 12, after 12 days of competition from the group stage, the 24 best members from two teams: FC Chieng Chung (Chieng Chung commune, Mai Son district, Son La province) and FC Muong Chanh (Muong Chanh commune, Mai Son district, Son La province) officially kicked the first leg of the final at FC Chieng Chung's home ground on April 25.

The final result of the first leg was, FC Muong Chanh won FC Chieng Chung with the score 2:1.

The football tournament is organised based on the ideas and suggestions of women in two communes, including members of the village savings and loan associations (VSLA) and other women cultivating and producing coffee locally.

With the aim of promoting the spirit of sport as well as promoting gender equality in the community, the tournament attracted 23 teams (10 teams from Chieng Chung commune and 13 teams from Muong Chanh commune) to compete in the draft board.

Defying cultural norms that dictate that women should away from playing football, the sport is rapidly gaining momentum and has become a passion offering women a sense of both liberation and empowerment.

The tournament is co-hosted by the Son La’s provincial Agricultural Extension Center, communal Women's Union and Youth Union of Chieng Chung and Muong Chanh and CARE International in the framework of the "Technologically Enhanced Agricultural Livelihoods” (TEAL) project funded by the Australian Government.

The second leg of the final will take place at FC Muong Chanh’s home ground on April 29./.
