St. Petersburg Governor Proposes Initiatives to Enhance Cooperation with Vietnam

Ambassador of Vietnam to Russia Dang Minh Khoi and staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Russia visited St. Petersburg from July 13 – 15. The visit was Khoi’s first trip to the Russian city since he assumed his position.
During the visit, Khoi and staff of the embassy met with Alexander Beglov, St. Petersburg Governor. Beglov expressed his pleasure to meet with the Vietnamese ambassador and staff, affirming that St. Petersburg had a close and long-term relationship with Vietnam.

Khoi affirmed that Vietnam leaders considered developing relations with Russia a top priority. Thousands of Vietnamese students who have been pursuing education in Russia are the bridge connecting the peoples of both countries.
He also expressed his hope that Vietnam and Russia would complete a statue of President Ho Chi Minh in St. Petersburg so it could be debuted in 2023, the year that marks 100 years since Uncle Ho first set foot in Petrograd (St. Petersburg today).
Beglov said the authorities in St. Petersburg considered cooperation with Vietnam a priority in their foreign policies. Regardless of the constraints brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, this relationship is not only maintained but also strengthened via online means.
He also expressed his hope to continue cooperating with Vietnam and put forward specific proposals to foster this cooperation, such as constructing the statue of President Ho Chi Minh in St. Petersburg and opening the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Culture and Business in St. Petersburg and a St. Petersburg Center for Culture in Ho Chi Minh City.

Khoi discussed proposals to strengthen the friendship, cooperation and comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Russia, boost ties between St. Petersburg and its sister cities in Vietnam and enhance cooperation between Vietnam and Russia, particularly between St. Petersburg and Ho Chi Minh City, in Covid-19 prevention.
The ambassador of Vietnam to Russia said he appreciated the contribution of Russian scientists in developing Covid vaccines and hoped that St. Petersburg would share Covid prevention experiences and vaccines with Vietnam.
In addition, Khoi said he hoped to boost economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, create favorable working, studying and living conditions for the Vietnamese community in St. Petersburg, promote exchange programs between the peoples and enhance cooperation in education and training. Khoi proposed organizing a Vietnam Culture Day in St. Petersburg.

Ambassador Khoi and the staff of the Embassy of Vietnam in Russia also had a meeting with Evgeny Grigoriev and Vyacheslav Kalganov, Chairman and Vice-chairman of the Committee for External Relations of St. Petersburg, respectively.
The ambassador had a meeting with representatives of the Vietnamese community in St. Petersburg. Khoi listened to their opinions and recommendations and addressed their questions so they could live, work and study with confidence.
