December 1 2021 marked the 103th anniversary of Romania's Independence Day. Vietnam is honored to one of the first countries to tie diplomatic relationship with Romania on February 3, 1950. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of Vietnam - Romania Friendship Association (1991 - 2021), Ambassador of Romania in Vietnam Cristina Romila shared her deep gratitude towards Vietnamese partners at the Association.

The valuable friendship foundation

Despite the long distance between Romania and Vietnam, the two countries share many similarities. Both are generous, friendly and hospitable people who work together to build a better world.

The two countries have witnessed generations of Romanian and Vietnamese people constantly contribute and maintain the fine traditional friendship. The proven mutual support shows the longstanding traditional friendship in many fields over the past seven decades.

In particular, seven years after the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations, cooperation between the two countries has developed rapidly, as exemplified by President Ho Chi Minh's historic visit to Romania in August 1957. Objectives and the main priorities of bilateral cooperation were set out in bilateral talks as well as specific projects in the fields of education, oil and gas industry, and agriculture.

Romania's support in the oil and gas industry continued even during the Vietnam War helped build the basis for developing a network of highly qualified engineers and researchers in Vietnam. Thanks to Romania, Vietnam was able to advance modern equipped oil refineries in South and Central Vietnam.

Romania also played an important role in peacekeeping of Vietnam conflict in the period 1965-1966. This led to the victory on the diplomatic front called "The Trinh's Signal" in January 1967, in which North Vietnam officially accepted negotiations with the United States. Romania's mediation in Bucharest contributed significantly to the first breakthrough of successful peace negotiations.

The foundation of this strong bilateral diplomatic relations is none other than the valuable foundation: the people of the two countries. Over the past seven decades, thousands of Vietnamese students and researchers graduating from prestigious Romanian language universities, which reflects the mutual trust between the two countries, and also reaffirms the momentum for a bright future in bilateral relations.

Ambassador reaffirmed Romania's commitment to Vietnam's national development, during a period of significant economic and social change. She is very touched by the dedication of the Association members to the Romania - Vietnam friendship.

A bright future in bilateral relations

During the COVID-19 pandemic Vietnam and Romania reaffirmed the deep sentiments in the bilateral relationship. Both put in full effort to provide mutual assistance in combating and overcoming the pandemic.

The Ambassador stressed the aid donations of masks to Romania in 2020 by the local government, by the National Assembly and the valuable contribution of the Vietnam - Romania Friendship Association to the Red Cross in Romania, which means noble gesture of affection and support.

In addition, Romania donated 300,000 doses of the national reserve vaccine to Vietnam to help in difficult times.

Since 2016, the bilateral political dialogue has had many important milestones in high-level dialogue exchanges: the Prime Minister of Romania paid an official visit to Vietnam in 2016, followed by the visit to Romania in 2019 by the Vietnamese Prime Minister. Official visits and consultations demonstrated two countries are ready to bring bilateral cooperation to a new height.

The signing of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the Investment Protection Agreement (IPA) in June 2019 is also one of the great successes of the EU's trade policy achieved. As part of a half-year mission, one of Romania's main priorities during its presidency of the European Union was the conclusion of two agreements between the EU and Vietnam. This helped promote the economic cooperation between Romania and Vietnam, bringing many benefits.

The comprehensive cooperation between Romania and Vietnam reached a new milestone in July 2021 with telecommunications at the highest state level in July 2021. President of Romania Klaus Iohannis and President of Vietnam Nguyen Xuan Phuc discussed measures to broaden and deepen bilateral relations, and agreed to maintain and promote exchange and cooperation mechanisms. in economy-trade, education-training, labor and other fields.

Romania and Vietnam actively coordinate and support each other in the United Nations, Francophone Organization as well as the ASEM forums.

Romania supports Vietnam's candidacy as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2020-2021 term, said the Ambassador. She believed Vietnam will complete the tasks to work towards peace, security and enhancing common prosperity in the region and around the world.

To conclude, Romania welcomes Vietnam's successful results as the ASEAN Chair in 2020 and supports Vietnam's foreign policy goals of ASEAN's central role in the region.
