Typhoon Noru: 14 Crew Members Rescued by Vietnamese Sailors

The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center rescued 14 crew members who were stranded at sea due to the ship's engine failure as typhoon Noru (typhoon No. 4) arrived.

At 10:30 am on September 25, the Thua Thien T-Hue Port Authority received a message from Captain Ho Van Thanh of the CHINA BOARD 1 ship. The ship was on its way from Vung Tau to Macau, when it arrived at the sea area of ​​​​Thua Thien -Hue province, the main engine had a problem and was dropping at a position with coordinates of 16034'180N, 107052'300E.

At the time of the incident, the ship was not carrying cargo and was carrying 14 crew members, including 5 Vietnamese and 9 Chinese).

The Thua Thien -Hue Port Authority immediately informed the Center for Maritime Search and Rescue Department II about the incident of the Chinese Board one, in order to make a plan to bring the ship to a safe shelter from the typhoon.

At 11:05 a.m on September 25, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (Center) received distress signal from the CHINA BOARD 1 ship (Panama nationality, load weighted 4915 tons, on board with 5 tons of DO oil and 23 tons of FO oil).

The crew on board tried to fix the main machine of the boat but failed. It also lost control and drifted under bad weather due to the impact of typhoon Noru.

The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center worked with Da Nang Coastal Information Radio to broadcast emergency announcements, call on ships in the area to come to support the ship in distress, also coordinated with the Maritime Administration of the Thua Thien Hue province, the Border Guard Command of Thua Thien Hue province to deploy measures to support the ship in distress. Appropriate efforts were also made to guide the ship's crew to avoid drift and prevent oil spill accidents.

However, at 10:20 a.m. on September 26, in the area where the ship drifted to, there was no means of support and rescue due to severe weather, and 14 crew members' lives were in danger as the storm No. 4 was reach the mainland.

At that time, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center dispatched the ship SAR 412 to immediately respond, performing the task of rescuing the crew of the CHINA BOARD 1. Around 3:00 pm on the same day, the maritime rescue force approached the ship CHINA BOARD 1 and successfully deployed the rescue operation.

With the support of the ship SAR 412, 14 crew members in distress were instructed to safely leave the ship and transfer to the ship SAR 412 for a health check and medical care.

The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center reported that the crew members of CHINA BOARD 1 will be handover by ship SAR 412 to Chan May port for handover at 5:20 pm on the same day.
