The terrain of Hoang Lien Son Vietnam is distinguished by its towering and expansive nature, featuring steep slopes and sharp peaks, interspersed with narrow and deep valleys. The geology here encompasses various types of rocks such as metamorphic rocks, crystalline schists, and granite.

According to statistics, the mountain peaks in the Hoang Lien Son range have up to 40 different species of Rhododendron, each with its beauty that adorns the Northwest mountains and forests.

It is a valuable asset, not only providing the biosphere and maintaining environmental stability but also has great potential in tourism development. This special flower will be able to bring economic and cultural values, actively contributing to promoting the image of Vietnam's mountains and forests.

Among the mountain peaks filled with Rhododendron flowers, many people mention Putaleng Peak in Lai Chau province. Rhododendron (also known as Do Quyen) is a specific flower growing on high mountains in Vietnam such as Hoang Lien Son, Bach Ma, Tam Dao, etc. It has two colors red and white, which bloom year-round, but the most notable time is in April. Fansipan Mount (Lao Cai Province) is also dubbed the “Kingdom of Rhododendron”.

In Lai Chau Province, a 2,619-meter-high mountain peak was recently surveyed by a tourism unit that proposed that the province name it “Do Quyen Peak” to develop local tourism associated with this typical flower.

In the past, to enjoy the rhododendron flowers blooming in Hoang Lien Son forest, the only way was to climb and follow the dangerous forest routes to the higher areas to look at the colorful carpets of rhododendrons amidst the green slopes below. Nowadays, since the launch of a cable car system to Fansipan, visitors can fly up to admire the beauty of rhododendrons.

The rhododendron forest is concentrated from a height of nearly 2,000 m up to Fansipan at 3,143 meters. When the flowers bloom, from the cable car cabins, visitors can see various beautiful golden or bright red blossoms.

To help visitors enjoy all the beauty of the precious flowers in Fansipan, a festival dedicated to rhododendrons is being held with various special cultural activities of the Northwest region.

The H’Mong is the most predominant ethnic minority group in Hoang Lien National Park. However, travelers will meet people from other ethnic tribes such as Dao and Day as well. Starting a conversation with them is easy because most of them are good at English. They have learned different languages from other tourists that they meet daily, or at school. By getting to know them, tourists can listen to their stories and may share a meal and laughter when they invite them to their homes. It will be a brand new experience to live with them, even just for one day.
