On July 24, United Nations leaders and countries' representatives to the United Nations paid tributes to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations in New York (USA).

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highly appreciated the key leadership role of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong. He noted that under Nguyen Phu Trong's leadership, Vietnam has continued its remarkable development and become an increasingly important partner to the United Nations.
On behalf of the United Nations, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his deepest condolences to the Government and people of Vietnam and General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's family.

On the same day, President of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly Dennis Francis met with Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations. Francis expressed his and UNGA's deepest condolences to the State and people of Vietnam. The President of the General Assembly expressed his sympathy for the great loss of the Vietnamese people at the passing of a devoted leader.

Also on July 24, Ambassador Anouparb Vongnorkeo, Head of the Permanent Representative of the Lao to the United Nations, and Ambassador Fu Cong, Head of the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations, signed the condolence book for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations.
Representatives of US government agencies, diplomatic corps, associations, and corporations, and representatives of overseas Vietnamese also visited and signed the condolence book for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong at the Vietnamese Embassy in Washington, USA.

On behalf of the US Department of State, US Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Kritenbrink expressed his deep appreciation and gratitude for the great contributions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to Vietnam - US relations.
Kritenbrink affirmed that the strategic vision, leadership role and sincere sentiment of the General Secretary are important basis for Vietnam and the USA to deepen political trust and reach outstanding achievements over the past decade. Among those, the establishment of a Comprehensive Partnership and upgrading to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership is a highlight.
Kritenbrink said that the US Department of State will work with Vietnamese ministries, units and agencies to carry on and promote the efforts of the General Secretary and generations of leaders of the two sides to nurture the bilateral relations.
Chuck Hagel, former Secretary of Defense, and Kelly McKeague, Director of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, highly appreciated General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's contributions to heal the past, build trust and strengthen cooperation between Vietnam and the USA.
They highlighted the historic visit of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to the US in 2015, and the motto of putting the past behind and looking towards the future that he affirmed on this occasion. The US officials emphasized that this is one of the basic principles of the two countries' relationship.
On behalf of the government and people of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, Ambassador Sisavath Inphachanh said after General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong passing, the government and people of Vietnam lost an outstanding leader and the people of Laos lost a close friend, a comrade who always supported and stood side by side with the Lao people in the cause of protecting, building and developing the country.
Ambassadors, representatives of ASEAN member states and other countries also visited and sent their deep condolences. They emphasized that the great contributions of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong to the cause of building and developing Vietnam will forever be remembered.
