US Official Wishes to Strengthen Exchange of Young US-Vietnamese Generations

Senator Patrick Leahy, president pro tempore of the US Senate has expressed his desire to further strengthen exchanges between the young generations of the two countries.

Patrick Leahy, president pro tempore of the US Senate and his wife Marcelle on October 25 visited the Vietnamese Embassy in the US.

Sharing at the meeting, Senator Patrick Leahy and his wife Marcelle repeatedly emphasized their special sentiment towards Vietnam, saying that they always feel happy when they come to Vietnam and love the Vietnamese people who are friendly, open-minded and always ready to learn.

Senator Patrick Leahy, president pro tempore of the US Senate expressed his desire to further strengthen exchanges between the young generations of the two countries, emphasizing that this is the best way for the people of Vietnam and the US to deepen mutual understanding and continue to contribute to the future strengthening of both nations’ friendship.

He affirmed that as president pro tempore of the US Senate and even after his retirement, he will continue to make efforts to contribute to the relationship between Vietnam and the US, especially to maintain and further ramp up cooperation in overcoming the consequences of war, for the benefit of each country, as well as the common interest for a better world.

In his speech, Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Quoc Dung affirmed that the Government and people of Vietnam recognize and always appreciate the merits and contributions of Senator Leahy, Lady Marcelle and advisor Tim Rieser to the reconciliation process aimed at promoting the development of bilateral relations.

That is from the initial support through the Leahy War Victims Fund in the early 90s of the last century, to the multi-million dollar programs and initiatives that later provided practical support to the victims of bombs and mines and Agent Orange/dioxin, dioxin decontamination at Da Nang and Bien Hoa airports, search for missing Vietnamese soldiers and investment in education.

The results achieved in overcoming the consequences of war have brought the two countries closer together, built and consolidated mutual trust and understanding, and opened up opportunities to strengthen cooperation in multiple fields.

Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Dung said he hopes that Senator Leahy would continue to support and contribute to the development of Vietnam-US relations, including cooperation in overcoming the consequences of war, while helping connect and build network of congressmen in friendship with Vietnam, who can continue the Senator's work on war remediation in the US Congress.

During the meeting, Senator Leahy and his wife also shared stories and profound memories about the country and people of Vietnam, and talked with Vietnamese Embassy staff.
